This is a beautiful raga popular in Hindusthani music particularly in shehnai vaadan. From what I can make out, Maru has an aroh/avaroh something like:-
S Mi Gu Mi P Nu S
S Nu Di P Mi Gu Mu Gu Ri S
Belonging to Kalyan That/Mela Mechakalyani this raga has a slight use of Ma also which leads to the allied counterpart Maru Behag.
The only kirtana I heard was one set in the Bhajana sampradAya - sung by Sri. O.S Arun (as part of the Margazhi mahotsavam) which went as : " Govinda.....MAdhava....GopAla....KEs'ava
Jaya Nanda Mukunda Nanda Govinda RAdhE GopAla

It was a refreshing piece & that too in a raga less explored in carnatic music.
Any more info on this raga?

Hi Mrinalini - could you please provide the usual notation used in this forum - S R1/R2/R3 etc...would it translate to:

S M2 G3 M2 P N3 S'
S' N3 D2 P M2 G3 M1 R2 S

I believe this is a fairly popular feature in HM concerts - usually sung in the evening ...BTW, the arohanam/avarohanam sounds devilishly difficult to negotiate...

My songlist does not have any CM compositions in this raga. Saranga would come somewhat close...

Short one though.
HM Prabha Atre, Ajoy Chakraborthy, Bhimsen Joshi ,Malini Rajurkar, have all sung Commercial versions.

Mukesh has sung a fine song Mathvali Naa

Vijay-
The notation yes-is as you've put it-I'm following the Standard format of the music texts
Acc.to Prof. Sambamurthy, Behag (of Carnatic music ) is the closest to Maru Behag-though the use of Ma (M1) is more in Behag of Carnatic music than in Maru behag.
