Smt mangalam ganapathy is a contemporary vageyakkara and this year like last few years ,musicians sing all her krithis in an exclusive mangalam ganapathy composition concert in a trust by her name. I am not too sure about her lyrical skills, but certainly most of the krithis have an overlap with lot of yesteryears popular well established vageyakkaras and their popular krithis.
Somehow I got a feeling that for most of the krithis after keeravAni , it was musically not well connected . Certainly this musically disconnected aberration in sAhityam (let us call it as MDAIS)hit upon significantly with this vidwan Bangalore Shankar, whom I only knew in the past 1 month (courtesy rasikas.org). Shankar sang well in alApana ,neraval and swaram but unfortunately looking in the notes to view the MDAIS dipped the concert.
Late only to hear a bilahari swaram that was just little longer than DRS quiz. Shankar's alApanai in hindOlam was very nice and the krithi was quite good. atAnA usually takes the shortest time to identify, because of MDAIS it took till the end of anupallavi for both me and 60+ woman who sat next me to identify. If there was something excellent in this concert it was shankar's alApanai in keeravani and his rendition of keeravani , perhaps the neraval suited very well in keeravani ,escaping the MDAIS.
tOdi and poorvikalyAni was rich in MDAIS as it was unforgiving, the shyamA was forgiving so MDAIS effect was minimum. mOhanam was sung well , but was almost a copy cat of pApanAsam sivan's popular kapAli.The last revati escaped the MDAIS, possibly revati is intrinsically lovely for tukkadA and I closed my eyes. The violinist and mridangam artist were quite good , though quite cautious with their move because of unfamiliarity of krithis. Tani was very good.
Talked briefly with the vidwan bangalOre shankar . We had a brief chat and he was a sweet person to talk with. Congragulated on his wonderful keeravAni.Shri Shankar told me that his guru was vallabham kalyanasundaram (sister of MAyuram vishwanatha sastri of shri mahaganapathe && jayati jayati bharatamAtA fame)
