Sri Saketharaman gave a thrilling concert at Sydney. It was highly enhanced by the brilliance of maestro Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman and the rising star Sri Nagai Sriram. Highlights included the swaraprastaram in hindolam (@’ paṭṭam kaṭṭa étravanḍi) which was full of purutam, violin alapana by Sriram in bhairavi and the soukyam and fireworks of Sri Sivaraman in the tani avartanam. The concert went for around 3 and half hours.

'varam arula' or 'varamarula'. 'marula' would mean '(to) be afraid of'.mohan wrote:Sri S. Saketharaman

That raga is already on the books under the name 'Sallapam' (romance?). Calling it somebody's invention and naming it Surya is fraud! Don't perpetuate this.mohan wrote:

"pattam katta etravandi".
Unless you are a Malayali, in which case you would be correct according to your language. Of course, we hear it in concerts as "pattam katta etra vandi" ("the cart that is appropriate for wearing the crown"). |(

Re: S. Saketharaman @ Sydney 9 September 2012
harimau - thanks for the edits - I've corrected.
As per surya/sallapam, surya seems to be the name in use these days. Not sure who introduced this name. There is some discussion here at http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... surya.html where it was suggested that surya is the Hindustani raga name. Further discussion on that raga should ideally be continued at that thread.

thanks, Mohan. I have really enjoyed watching Saketharaman blossom into an accomplished vocalist over the last few years. And with such top-class accompaniment, this concert must have been delightful.
IIRC, "Baso more nainan..." was sung by Smt MSS in Hameer (or equivalent) for the movie Meera.

Thats nice review. Thanks Mohan.
Saketaraman presented a wonderful concert @ Melbourne as well, on 8th Sep'12. The accompanying artists were magnificent, with Nagai Sreeram's Violin and great Umayalpuram Sivaraman on Mridangam, which made the concert truly special.
The concert was part of the feature concert programme of Inconcert Music, organised by Sri.Sridhar Chari.
1. Viriboni- bhairavi
2. Nambi Kettavar yevar ayya- hindolam
3. Seetapathe - khamas
4. Bhogeendrasatinam - kuntalavarali
5. Thodi - (main kriti)- thaamatham yen....In thodi ragam, there was a flash of Sruthibedham on two Ragams, and one of them I guess was Mohanakalyani.
6. Saketaniketana - Kannada
7. RTP - Hamsanandi Pankajacharana Sankataharana Venkataramana Palayamam Sada...Syama...brindavanasaranga...Latangi..
I believe the last ragam in RTP was chosen as Latangi because of the inspiration from a Kriti "Venkataramana" by Papanasam sivan, as it was part of the lyrics too!
8. Krishna nee begane - Yamuna Kalyani
9. Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai - Ragamalika
10. Thillana - Behag
11. ni nama rupamulaku (mangalam)
And it was last concert in Melbourne by overseas artistes' for this year... Waiting for the bang to start again, next year!
