T. Brinda Centenary

Post by padavarnam »

I learnt that today (Nov 6) is the 100th birthday of Smt. T. Brinda. It is surprising that no Sabha in Chennai has felt it worth their while to celebrate it. Especially an institution like the Music Academy that should have taken the lead in organising something seems indifferent to it. What a shame!

Two of her very meticulous and senior students from Mumbai - Smt. Kalyani Sharma and Smt. Alamelu Mani organized a very memorable event in Mumbai last Saturday to celebrate the doyen's music. The Shanmukhananda Sabha also organized an event in her memory on Nov 5 where Shri Chitravina Ravikiran gave a lec-dem followed by a vocal-duo concert by Smt. Kalyani Sharma and Alamelu Mani.

Kalyani Sharma(my cousin--but please DO NOT HOLD it against her!!!! ) and Alamelu Mani(mother of Hariharan and wife of the Late Chellamani Sir one of the best teachers in Bombay) are the MOST DEVOTED disciples of Brindamma and Mukthamma and they have done more to perpetuate the legacy of B and M than any of the institutions serving CM.

Dear Ramesh Sir,

To remind you, we met at Cleveland earlier this year. I also met you wife at NY during my concert at Shruti Laya.

I really don't know why my dear Kalyani Mami has been ignored this whole year. In Cleveland earlier this year, I was almost in tears because no one cared, nor did anyone show even a sign of having left her out. Do you know, I have a recording in which Brindamma has praised Kalyani Mami in the Shanmukhananda Sabha in 1992. She says in her own characteristic manner, " This Kalyani - she has learned from me for about 30 years now, sings with me. Whenever I get down of the rail in Mumbai, I always see Kalyani is right in front of me. She has very good jnAnam - she knows to play the Veena. Whoever has knowledge of Veena, their jnAnam and delivery is always different."

Has Brindamma ever uttered words like this about anyone else in public!

Why was my Guru left out, in the DVD, in Cleveland, everywhere! Why! :( (I am unable to control my tears, sorry).
I will always regret that I was unable to do anything. However let me add that I did try. But I failed - who is going to listen to this nobody! I know the reasons why this happened very well but unfortunately cannot reveal them to anyone.

I sincerely hope that people remember her during KSN's centenary (I will also try my best to do my bit).

With total surrender and pranaams to my Guru's music,
Gokul

We are all listening here. I am struck by your devotion to your guru. Bless your heart.

P.S: I know your message was addressed to MKR. I am just posting here to say that your words are not lost on the world.

Why are you people making a big issue of Cleveland? That organization has become a money making scam, extracting money from gullible NA kids showing a bunch of carrots. Don't get me wrong. They are doing what a businessman would do and thrive on the vulnerability of the NA parents. It is up to others to decide if they want to fall into that trap. Cleveland or not these great musicians will remain in our hearts for what they have contributed.
