Re: M S Sheela @ Ranjani Fine Arts - December 8
Very Good Concert
Song List:
1. Varnam in nalinakanthi
2. Meru samaana- Maya mala gowla- Swaram
3. Sree Hari vallabham- Suddha Dhanyasi
4. Madhurambikaayam sadaa bhakthi karomi- Dikshitar- (Ragam, Neraval and Swaram). Ragam sounded obviously like Hemavathi. MSS told that it was xxxx bbb zzzz ragam in dikshitar school and Hemavardhini in other schools.
5. Nee valla guNa dosham eami, sri raama- Kapi
6. aTu kArAdani palka - Maararanjani(announced)
7. Brief ragam of the raga of "Jaga janani ... vaaNi kalyaani". The song presented was Sharade of Veena Venkatagiriyappa (announced). Ragam is rathipathi priya in normal parlance whereas the poet called it sharadepriya- anyhow it is a priya ragam of the audience, the artist concluded!
8. Main: Sankarabharanam- "Sundareswaruni jhoochi" of Thyagaraja- R,N, and S with some kanakku.
9. Thani- Just brilliant. When Shivu and Sukanya are in form, they excel each other and it was really superb.
10. Venkata ramanane bhaaro; seshachala vaasane bhaaro of purandaradasa in Desh- bhajan type; enjoyable.
11. Shankhamukhadesswara sharadhe?
12. Naanoru vilayaattu bommaya- clear Tamil pronunciation.
13. Ashtapathi- Nindathi chandana- hamsanandi?
14. mangalam
(There may be many mistakes in the above list. I had left my ready reckoner behind- I mean,my wife, of course
)
As always I enjoyed MSS concert a lot. Sri.RK Srikantan's stamp was clear especially in swaram renditions. Also, never a sruti lapse. I guess she had a bad throat that day- so about 10% less performance but once again, she left the high sanchaaraas and some repeat sangathis to Nalina Mohan to complete , and her own singing was flawless. Also, it needs great courage and eminence to present so many unknown songs - rare kritis?(only Meru samana and ashtapathi were familiar to me) and still to keep the tempo of the concert without sagging.
There was very good attendance. The simple elegant decoration, the beautiful painting of the Trinity and the unique taamboola bags for artists, nice sunDal for the audience- very nice indeed. The 8 cubit veshtis covering the stage in place of the usual jamkhanas(jamakkaLam) should, I am sure, be having a reason. Ranjani- keep it up. Thanks for the concert.

Thanks, KSSR ji for the generous compliments !
It was a good classical music concert with lots of variety - vaggeyakara (so many of them represented), rAga chakra, tAla and kovuri pancharatna as the main. Thanks to all the artistes for giving us such an experience..
