First Things First: TMK announced his concerts will be free. But the KGS said only limited seats are free and this resulted in some chaos in the sabha. Finally the concert started at 10 after all the rasikas settled down instead of the 9:30 start.

TMK dived headlonged into a rare Mangala Kaisiki. Just humed a few swaras for warm up and went straight into the song. As is his practice, a Chowka Rendition straightaway. This was followed by a beautiful Rithi Gowlai Alapanai and both TMK and RKSK were Fabulous.Infact RKSK shone even more brighter and there were many bales and besh from TMK.This brilliant built up was followed by Badaliga Deera. When TMK sang swaras and Neraval at Saketa Rama he sounded bit like Hindustani singer. But the swaras were indeed delightful.

Next came Jambupathe.Again in Chowka. Now 3 on 3 Chowka rendition. And he was singing in lower octaves for all the 3.

After Jambupathe he sang a Kambodhi in a leisurely manner. RKSK's version of Kambodhi was out of the world stuff. Then came the twist. When everybody was expecting for a Kambodhi Sahityam, TMK changed his mind and started Yadukula Kambodhi Alapanai. This again lead to violin return. Then TMK had a word with RKSK and started Kalyani Alapanai. Rasikas were perplexed. Here the man has sung two Ragas and again 3rd one. People started asking around what happened to Kambodhi and some were speculating TMK is doing RTP on 3 Ragas.

Finally he sang the Sahitya - Kalyani - Talli ninu Nera - his neraval and Swaras at Purani Rani was excellant. RKsK was spot on and matched word by word literally. Then a Thani followed. It was a minimalistic Thani.

Then Tukadas started. When it was 12 organisers asked TMK to wind up. But he was in a mood to sing more. Hence he asked audience can i sing for some more time. Audience gladly agreed and then followed a hue of requests from them. Someone asked him for Pasuram and he obliged. When someone asked for Eppo varuvaro in Jonpuri, TMK announced i will sing Jonpuri but not eppa varuvaro but after alap, changed his mind and sang the same.

The good things about the concert was TMK's was at his creative best.Sang like a man possessed.Violin was superb. This concert should be actually called as Vocal-Violin duet. Violin was not a mere accompaniment.

There are few negatives as well. TMK kept on asking RKSK what to sing and ennachi and all. There were too many chowka renditions.RTP was not there. TMK looked like lost in between. Why he abandoned Kambodhi and Yadukula Kambodhi was a puzzle.

Just some corrections:

The Kambodhi alapana (vocal and violin) was followed by a Sahana alapana (vocal and violin) and then a Dhanyasi alapana (vocal and violin). Only after that did the Kalyani krithi begin.

After Manasa Sancharare, Krishna sang the Khamas javali Jaanaro. Lyrics here: http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1083 ... anaro.html. There was no Sarasangi.

He has not abandoned anything. That is his kaccheri paddhathi. He sings alapana as a standalone piece. Two in a row is further surprise.

Why he abandoned Kambodhi and Yadukula Kambodhi was a puzzle....
Reminds me of a cartoon from the 60s . Two girls are chatting on a bus on the way to work and one is telling the other :
" This is such a different kind of detective novel . A guy gets killed by the villain from another book !!" :)

Have to appreciate TMK's decision to give free concerts this season, as an initiative to draw more audience to his concerts. Hope he doesn't give it next time in Krishna Gana Sabha though. If its a free concert the seating should be on first come first serve basis. There were many free seats but still they chose to lock all the doors and were giving priority to Members and Sponsors ONLY and were extremely rude to non-members. We never witness such a thing in Music academy, Naradha Gana Sabha etc. In that case why not KGS announce their concerts as members only. If they give this kind of third-rated treatment to the audience who will go to that sabha again? At least if they have made it partially ticketed, people like me who want a vantage seat would have purchased the ticket. The concert was enjoyable. But his unconventional approach is not digestible to all. He sang three raga alapanas at a stretch Kamboji, Sahana and Dhanyasi but chose to follow up with a kalyani krithi.

Looking at the OP song list , with kalyani alapana also being there ,it is four alapanas in a row.

It is unfortunate that KGS was rude. But one has to appreciate that members and even non-members buy season tickets and have seat allotments. I was once a member of KGS. To deny them the allotted seats would not be just either. They should have offered all unreserved seats free.

Again the usual TMK gimmick. :). But with regards to KGS, they are extremely rude even when it comes to ticketed concert. I remember couple of years ago, both Sanjay and Sudha Ragunathan requested the audience to fill up the sits half way through the concert. They said if there are seats available why not allow people to come in front, knowing that sponsors didn't make it to the event.

Experiments, according to him, can be indulged in for the sake of novelty for a brief period. One cannot sustain with patchwork artistry. “Wider appeal should come forth by establishing the authentic beauty of one’s genre. I understand it is hard to be indifferent to influences in this shrinking world. Take in only what is suitable. You need to be discriminatory. That is the only way to make your art identifiable, to impact minds, to touch souls or else it is not hard to get lost in the musical clutter.”
Virtuoso violinist T.N. Krishnan speaks to Chitra Swaminathan - The Hindu. This ragam only is slightly odd for me, I have not been in a TMK where this has happened, maybe I will feel different once I have experienced the atmosphere? I don't know, but certainly odd, especially 4 on the trot!

At least you guys experience it live rather than experiencing it via forums and reviews like me :(

I saw this in twitter about KGS incident:

I received a message for a rasika today saying that there was great difficulty for many rasikas today at my concert in Krishna Gana Sabha as many rows were unfortunately reserved for members though this was a free concert. I sincerely apologise. I was not aware of this. I have already spoken to the organisers at Mylapore fine arts, my next concert ( 22nd) and confirmed that no seats are reserved for anybody.

Thank you for your patience

Yes, I was at mfac today and they were really polite. Today's concert was melancholic but superb. I really enjoy the vilambha kaalam and mandara-madhyastayi sancharas. And finally what a treat to the ears. Main was mukari - he sang two songs back to back in thIs.

In a lighter vein, I was at the Music Academy yesterday and in our group a lady said this and I quote:

Q. What happens when you throw a person with Bipolar disorder and the Sangeeta Sampradaya Praharshini (SSP) together into a blender.

A. You get TM Krishna singing.
