Whenever I suggest to my Tamilian friends that the word 'ambAL' means the same as the Sanskrit 'ambA', they act offended and scornful. For my education, could some knowledgeable friends explain and expand on the meanings of the Tamil word, so I know how it means something else and much more than the Sanskrit word.
