Hi to all
I have a question. If we replace the Chatusruthi Dhaivatam in rAga mOhanaM with a suddha dhaivatam, what is the name of the rAga that comes. Of course, the ArOhaNa and avarOhaNA will be:
S R2 G3 P D1 S'
S' D1 P G3 R2 S
Thanks!!!!
With best regards
Snigdha

According to Lakshman this is also known as 'janasammOdini' though that raga has other variants. See

That is what Dr BMK calls this rAga.. But the rest of the world calls it vAsanti, since they have another janasammOdini :)

Nagamani Srinath has composed a tillana in this raga and sings it often in her concerts. I have heard Nityasree render this ragam on the radio but forget the composition. I'd be interested in learning more about specific compositions in this raga.

knandago2001,

I think the composition you have in mind is Sattur Karpagam's "mayil mIdu viLaiyADum vaDivElane"

I have heard "gOvinda ninne" sung by Maharajapuram Santhanam, which is said to be in janasammOdini. Is this vAsanthi or the other j.sammOdini? Can anyone mention any tamil movie song in this raga?

There is this famous song from "saagara sangamam" where Ilayaraja plays an exhillarating hide and seek with mohana and vaasanthi. this starts off in mohana and he goes in to vaasanti in between. enjoy:
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/pJ7 ... As1NMvHdW/

i am sorry if you feel its sacrilegeous to mention Ilayaraja in a classical music thread...but i just couldnt resist sharing it.

Lakshman-ji,

The last line of the caraNam should read aruNagiri pAvil vanda bAla murugane.

The ciTTa svarams go like this in Nithyasree's version:

d , , p | d , g p | d , , , | , , , - g | d , , p | d , g p | d , , , | , , , - S ||
d , , p | d , g p | d , , , | , , , - S | d S - p d | p d S - g | d , , p | d , , S ||
d , , - S | , d S , | p d S , | g p d S | , r g p | d S , g | r , p g | , d p , | S d , , ||

kssuresh,

gOvinda ninna nAmave canda has a distinct n2 usage, along with d2. The ArO-ava is s r2 g3 p d2 n2 S - S n2 d2 p g3 r2 s.

Sri CML...if you observe the lyrics both tam & telugu, the word 'mohana' occurs in both of them...and exactly at that point the song goes in to Vaasanthi. the word mohana is actually sung in vaasanti :)

Thanks folks. With the audio link provided by Lakshman I am getting to understand this lovely raagam thogh it could never be a competition to Mohanam. I believe this is a janya of maararanjani, right?

O.S. Arun has recently tuned the ashtapadi "Priye Charusheele" in vasanti... I had never really listened the ragam before and this song made me fall in love with it.

Mayil Meedhu is a composition of Arunagirinathar.
The pen name "Arunagiri" appears towards the end.

Thanks brother Ramraj!
I did listen to your composition. The raga bhava is very clear and quite nice! Again interesting context of composition. Did Voletigaaru ever try to render the composition or in this raga?

Would somebody post the translation of Sri Ramraj's Telugu Composition? Certainly this should be added to Lakshman's list. Thanks

Hallo CM Lover, I have posted the the conceptual meaning for the Kriti in Vaasanthi
The conceptual meaning of vaasanthi raga kriti(brovaka yundata Nyaayamaa)

Pallavi: Oh ! Raama (Raghukula Saarvabhaumaa !!
Is it fair (on your part) to remain unmindful
Of my plea to protect me ?
A., Pallavi :Did’nt I deem the the Daasyamaana Bhakti of
HANUMAAN(the SUPREME Musician/ and a person of few
and selective sweet words) is superior than the SUPEREMO
HIMSELF !!
Caranam :Are’nt You aware of my conviction that the
Fruits are all due to my previous bhirth’s penance,
Which includes the very thought of your lotus feet
And the one derived from dedicating my musical out-pourings
Thru’ the melody of Vaasanthi,endearing to fill the
Discerning ears.Don’t u still feel it fit to protect me ?

Very nice dear Ramraj!
Beautiful lyric and beautiful raga beautifully rendered by you. I hope our musically inclined Rasikas will practice it and render it. Knowing the meaning will improve the bhaaavam of presentation.

Thank you very much!

IMHO, this is totally not needed....as I, and many others as well, feel that people like Ilayaraja and other music directors have done yeoman service by stringing out songs in classical ragas thereby creating a sense of awarness in many a "non-classical" music lovers...if in this process, even a microscopic minority of these people are going to shift to classical music, then carnatic music will be that much richer!

Cheers

is hindustani kalaavati related to janasammodhini? Ravishankar has composed a song "haye re o ' in kalavati in the film ANURAADHA, it is rumored that RAVI SHANKAR WHOIS SUPPOSED TO HAVE CREATED KALAAVATI GOT WILD WHEN SOMEBODY SAID THAT IT IT WAS DERIVED FROM JANASAMMODHINI GOBILALITHA

There is a popular Kanadasa Kriti "Eesha ninna charana bhajane', which is sung most beautifully by those identifying themselves with rudrapatnam school(RK Srikantan, MS Sheela)..
"Govinda ninna namave chanda", as popu;arised by santanam is infact janasammodini. Its is Vasanthi plus kaishika nishada..its a kinda hybrid of vasanti and valachi ;)
