Badari,
The Tamizh song (lullaby) mAsil ayOdhiyil is a composition of Neela Ramamurthy.

Is it a composition of Smt. Neely Ramamoorthy or is the music set by her?

I attended this concert - that was literally in my backyard. I just had to make an anjaneya leap from my parents' place
Really applaud Sanjay for keeping the short concert interesting enjoyable. He plans his concerts so well - IMHO not many folks do that these days. There was a mix of popular(marukelara), not so popular (telisi rama/nannu vidachi) and not often heard (evvare ramayya sari/enduko ni manasu). I was looking forward to some rare songs on anjaneya and in that respect was a tad disappointed. HKV's accompaniment was very nice - and the Morsing got a bunch of "sabash" from Sanjay.
One big crib - was the Speeeeeeeechhhhhhhh...... Bangaloreans are prone to talk talk talk - exercise their kannada panditya - appreciated but wrong forum!! Am already nervous about the long speeeeeeeches at Rama Seva Mandali, especially from the usual suspects.

sorry badari, i meant evvare ramayya sari the gangeyabhushani one. My bad for the confusion (i was clear in my mind but not while typing)
Something needs to done about speeches in Bangalore. If they have to - they can take a cue from Krishnaprasad of SRLKM - who keeps it short and witty. I don't want to bring up names here - but RSM has professional speech enthusiasts who keep on taaaaaaaalking.... killing time. If you know any of the organizers, do let them know.

Rama Seva Mandali speeches are the stuff of legend! I heard an old recording of a friend's when he had performed at RSM in the junior slot, and even there the organisers spoke for 10 whole minutes in a one hour concert.

Nadasurabhi does it pretty neat as well. No interruption during the concert ( at least for the Annual festival)
Good to see no body mentioned Unnati Center here
Only time, I witnessed a short speech at RSM wsa for a TNS concert 3 years back. The person thanked "T N Gopalakrishnan and the team" for a great concert.

Guys,
Perhaps I can figure out this speech culture.
The original organisers of concerts in Bangalore and Mysore were more fund raisers and promoters, not the ones who could talk well. So they asked some folks with speechifying skills to throw their weight behind the mike and make an impression mainly on the musicians and more knoweledgeable rasikas that the organisers weren't dumb but culture-mongers. There was an additional need-they wanted to remind the people about the next day's events and things like BTS buses to take them home after the concerts. It all added up to the plate collection, you see. Also the accompanist names could have changed from the pamphlets earlier and musicians would never announce their accompanist names. So all in all it became a ritual. Of course the speech-makers take their job more seriously that the mike guys who look ABSOLUTELY bored with the whole damn program.
That's why I liked it when TMK nipped the speech in the bud as it were, regardless that it was Mr SRLKM.

Great recording! Makes me ask for more.
SVK speaks for about 6 min., full of praise for TNK and a bit about TS.
Thanks Varsha.

Missing the woods for the tree- Concentrating on the 10 min speech and leaving out the two hour concert.
Let us come back to the concert itself.
Gangeyabhushini stole the slow, IMHO. The bewitching ragam and composition. This is where Thyagaraja wins over others- what variety; what a genius. Very well presented by SS bringing out its beauty in full.
Maasil ayodhiyil is a synopsis of Ramayana, well written. Initially I thought it was Kulasekhara Alwar, who was the first to sing a lullaby to rama- his ishta deivam- as he was not pleased that Rama in Ramayana jumped directly from birth- to vasishta- to Viswamitra without a proper childhood treatment. But this lullaby was quite current/ contemporary in its vocabulary. Now I know the author.
As was pointed out, absence of hanuman was a surprise. even more surprising was the leaping in of Muruga in Erumayil eri viLayaadum muham, in an almost entirely rama concert in a hanuman temple. But they are all relatives, I think
. No problem.
The ambience and mood was entirely different from a sabha concert. More a bhaktas congregation and less of rasikas. Short concert. Average acoustics - corrugated sheet roof- not jam packed. Leisurely relaxing and absolutely enjoyable performance.

I'm traveling, and haven't had the time to visit Rasikas.org. Even now, just having a peek.
Didn't know you were there!
You are so right about the ambiance. I haven't heard concerts of any artiste in such a setting in a long while (Venugopalaswamy temple in Malleswaram, though is within the temple, seems like any other hall).
Here, it was the day of the rathOtsava,-and to see the utsava mUrthy right there as you found your way to the hall was a surprise (couldn't climb up the hill at night, with all those steps leading to HanumAn's sannidhi, and there he was!). A song on him would have been nice, I agree. However, HanumAnji himself would have relished the concert with songs in praise of his RAmA--and nary a one on himself
Well, one on Murugan just happened, as Sanjay sometimes sings a few viruthams in a row, as a mixed daiva mAlikA! I'm partial to a long virutham culminating in a few verses about the same deivam, where the impact of the elaboration is felt more--just as in an RTP, because of the long duration, there is more time to savor different rAgAs in a row.
