Chitravenu - Lecture Demonstration

Post by uday_shankar »

Dear Rasikas,

I am pleased to invite those of you attending the Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival to attend my lecture-demonstration of the chitravenu, a new kind wind instrument I've been developing for the last few years. As the name implies, the chitravenu brings in chitravina-like continuity to a flute(i.e., "venu")-like soundscape and draws on the playing skills of both.

I was inspired to embark on this project from my interactions with the maestro Chitravina Ravikiran.

If there's a webscast, I will post a link here. The lec-dem is at the Waetjen Auditorium on Sunday March 31st 2013 at 1:00 PM. Look forward to seeing you :). Here's the schedule:

http://www.aradhana.org/schedule.html#sun1

Needless to say, I am engaged in patenting the key distinguishing features of the chitravenu in several countries including India and the United States.

My time is extremely tight over the next month but I will be happy to respond to any questions in April.

I think you should hire a hot-shot lawyer and file the patent in general terms covering all wind instruments. Then you can have all musical instrument makers paying you royalty. :)

Don't you want to collect royalties on every tuba, French horn, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, recorder, flute, kazoo, digiridoo, nagaswaram and a few other instruments whose names escape me right now?

A certain mridangist and his dad may be of help to you in this matter of selecting the right lawyer.

Nick,
You're off the hook starting now :).

Probably others here have had "sneak previews" of Uday's invention. When he invited me in, after a lift home in my car, and I sat chatting to him in his home office, I had registered the presence of a few musical instruments, and quite a heap of technical bits and pieces which I guessed to be related to his work. Then came the time for the demonstration, and he picked up something from the side of the room that I had never guessed could belong to the musical-instrument category amongst the miscellany of engineering. In fact, I could not guess until the moment he started to play it.

Then there was no doubt whatsoever. Technically fascinating ...and sweet on the ears :)

I am sure Uday has registered and Patented his device before the Public Demonstration.
I know he has been working on it for more than past 5 years..
As the desciple of ChitravINa Ravikiran it is appropriate he calls it ChitraveNu..

Yes sir, I have :). Here's the link to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where my invention is registered for the international phase of the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty):

http://patentscope.wipo.int/search/en/d ... &recNum=54

The above link also has my line drawing of a player operating the instrument. So that's kind of how it looks (Mahavishnu, is that good for a preview :) ?).

Congrats Uday!! Regret I cannot make it to Cleveland because of some pressing engagements that weekend--frankly your demo was the only incentive for me to undertake the arduos trek--these days driving 1100 miles RT seems like a journey to the Moon!!!

I am sure I would get the Buzz this far!!
Good Luck on your demo!!

Uday
Quite technically impressive.
I am speculating what song(s) you will be playing.
They have to be ones which truly show-case your invention.

In the interest of progress in CM the Music Academy should consider honoring inventions that promote
CM innovatively. You are the prime candidate!

Just watched Uday's lecdem. Congratulations! The sound emanating from the instrument is almost flute like. The one hand available to keep tala while playing the chitravenu is an advantage. It was hard to see the full instrument clearly on the webcast. Look forward to checking it out on your website!

Fascinating invention!
You have delivered the baby; and done the naamakaraNam
the CM world has to bring up and mature the child to adulthood.
It has great potential and room for innovations that will add merit to CM!

Folks
a better quality of Uday's Cleveland demo is available @
http://chitravenu.com/
I would love to hear from flautists about their views on Chitravenu.
It is the new kid on the block and requires training and experimentaton from both experts and learners.
We of course will have to wait for Uday to start manufacturing it in quantity for us to get our hands on it.
But feel free to offer suggestions for improvement/enhancement and new features appropriate for CM...

Thanks everybody for the good wishes and complements.

I was a little disappointed with the demo for 2 reasons a) I barely got started when it was time to wrap up :) b) Couldn't hear the shruti box well on stage so had to "wing" it, resulting in misjudgments in the upper sthayi.

Anyways, we have to let the chips fall where they may :). Perhaps the next demo will be a better one. The response from professional flautists was very warm and positive.

Hopefully there will emerge great players on this instrument in the years to come.

Hey Udhay!! No need to apologise--the design is ingenious and what you played certainly offers great potential--the only limitation with such new innovtions is always the competency of the player!!(present company excerpted!!!.

>the only limitation with such new innovtions is always the competency of the player

I also fear the built it in bias by the CM ecosystem in looking at anything new with suspicion and doubt even before taking the time to understand it. That anti-present attitude comes from this stifling thinking that it did not come to us from centuries back and it does not have any of that authenticity. I am glad Uday got the opportunity to demo it to a wider audience and that the response from the professional flutists is positive. If a professional flutist uses it for a song or two in a concert ( just to start with ), that would sow the seeds for the general audience to take notice. Congratulations Uday and all the best.

Are you going to be able to take up the idea of the Chennai demo?

Of course Nick...Will keep you posted.

It was really nice and a great moral support to have forumites Arunk and Cienu at the demo :). Arun and I go back a long way, although we didn't know that until recently :). It's a pity I had to miss Aishwarya Cienu's concert due to some volunteering commitments. I heard it went off very well.
