What beautiful imagery - sItA is described as 'kattipiDi iDaiyAL' - I guess it means "one who has a waist (iDaiyAL) like the handle (piDi) of a knife/sword (katti)"...

Very nice. A new one for me.

Ravi,
It may also be kaTTip piDi iDaiyAL--slim enough iDai which lends itself to be encircled with the hand which holds the kANDIpam ??

reNDAi: in two(not raNDAi)

c1: (malar) tUva
(yAnai) piLiRa?

c2: ena oLi vIsa?
seidAr-arasar-ellOrum
niRaivERa
c3: I have some doubts about a few words here.
dharma kAma shAstram?
vara mAmuni I think--not varu.

You know I'm also fussy about the difference between ra and R while writing words down ;)
These verses also have several 'sa' sounds and non-tamizh speakers have to be careful about the pronunciation. All the 'sha's found here should not be sung as in 'varusham'. seidu, sol, sevi are some examples.

Many old tamizh songs pose a problem because we find many tamizh-ised sanskrit words in them!
Not easy, but worth our while.

I see more requests for rare rAma nATaka krutis from veenapusthakadharini. Wonder if she's planning to present rAmaNATakam in dance!

The Goddess at the tirumullaivoyil temple is called 'latA madyAmbikA' or 'koDi iDai nAyaki', one who's waist is as thin as a creeper. The God is mAsilAmaNIswarar.

Smt. Nityashree has sung the first caraNam of this kRti. And she sings it as kattipiDi...

Punarvasu,
That is koDi (latha) iDai.
Yes, dharmAgama it is!

Ravi,
Yes, Nityashree, in the way of her grandmother and great uncle sang, is very clear with the words in her singing. However, I won't go by that. I heard her pronounce a word differently in a song. Can't blame her. She might have been taught that way to sing it. Perhaps a typo in the book.Or, a tha, da confusion with the tamizh script. Can't remember the word now :(
I cannot somehow see a kathippiDi here.

Arasi, by requirement, the handle of a knife, fits in the palm of one's hand...and is probably a reference to slender-waisted sItA...given the general tone of the kRti, I do not think kaTTi piDi fits here though....

arasi:
The words raNDAi, tURa, pIRa, and sheidarasar are as per the original.
As you have mentioned, 'ena oLi vIsa' is right. Instead of 'ena', 'enna' is used.

PUNARVASU:
Thanks. It is 'dharmAgama'.

Lakshman:
A few corrections --

C1:
tUra - tURa

C2:
shlAghyam anna - shilAggiyam enna
hunkAram sheidArasar - humkAram sheidarasar

C3:
dharmAkAma - dharmAgama

arasi, it can't be kaTTi piDi, since it has to rhyme with the sutti, pattu and citta of the rest of the caraNam. Similarly tUva instead of tUra will disturb the antaprAsa of the caraNas. tUra is appropriate, in the sense of 'puSpa-vRSti' which is what the gods did!

Also I think you meant kOdaNDam, not gANDIpam. It would be quite scandalous if arjuna (the gANDIvi) encircles jAnaki's waist.. :)

I have a couple of suggestions that I've incorporated (in colour), and give the text again, along with the other corrections.

[actually, the nasal prAsAksara in this carana is neither n nor m - it is G, the letter after ka in the tamil alphabet; so siGgAra, huGgAra etc.]

PB,

If your reason for giving it as dishai-yAnaigaL is 'the book say so', I defer to it. However, dishiyAnaigaL is a legitimate variant. dik - dishA and dishi are used in the South Indian languages and in South Indian versions of Sanskrit as well. [vide aSTa-dishi-samrakSaka in the nATa favourite - rakSa mAm sharaNAgatam].

The term of course refers to the diggajas.

Also, what does this line mean? - oru kAlanum inda Osaitanai Ork-koNAmal shevi mUDa

keerthi,
Namaskaram. I always admire your posts and respect your views.

Yes, I confess: 'the book says so' !
As you have rightly pointed out, 'tishai' is also written as 'thishi' in Tamil.
However, AFAIK aSTa diggajAs are referred to in Tamil as 'dishai-yAnai'; have not come across the term 'dishi-yAnai' in Tamil.

Again, for 'kAlanum', I was guided by 'the book'.

The lyrics in Tamil:-
... ...
சித்தப் பிரமையாலே நாலிரு திசையானைகள் தலை பீற
... ...
ஒருகாலனும் இந்தஓசைதனை ஓர்க்கொணாமல் செவி மூட

Keerthi deserves all the namaskArams for his aRivu, but he's a mere babe in age among us!
He's one among those that I know who makes me feel that the rasikAs and musicians of the future are going to be more endowed than we are (of our generation)!

Ravi, PB, Keerthi and Lakshman,
Yes, 'piDi iDaiyAL' exactly!
