Enough has been written in this forum about Sowmya's extensive repertoire (esp T compositions) and unquestioned vidwat. Tonight was a reaffirmation of all those aspects that make her music appealing to discerning connoisseurs. If I were to pick ONE outstanding piece tonight, it would undoubtedly be aThANa. What an alapana, what a lovely neraval and what lovely execution of the varied sangatis that make 'bAlakanakamaya' one of the most outstanding kritis in this raga. The Varali alapana was another highlight, before the mikeman inexplicably decided to lower the overall volume when Kannan started his version of Varali, leading to a sort of muffling that lasted until the start of Kharaharapriya. Overall a great performance, supported ably by the accompanists. Narayanan's tani was excellent.

Among todays women artists, the only one I would pay to watch is Smt. Sowmya. I remember her concert in Cleveland Aradhana last year...manirangu and thodi....delectable. However, it was her Ososi in Mukhari that stayed with me... chastely rendered with perfect kaalapramanam....Sri Neyveli Narayanan is also an amazing mridangist....his accompaniment and thanis are always fantastic. That is to be expected from a student of Sri UKS & Tanjore Upendran
