It was Mahasivarathri and the compositions selected were thematic. The few that fell outside the theme were requests from rasikas.

Right from the word go with the vibrant and brisk Darbar varnam, Ranjani Gayatri set the tone of the concert. Kedaram was handled beautifully. It was the first time I heard this composition so it made it even more special. The swaras @ Paramananda sparkled. However, the Anandabhairavi item was top class! The audience sat transfixed (possibly holding their breath!) as all four performers brought out the magnificence of the raga, composition and the genius of the composer to the helm. Gayatri’s raga essay of Mohanam, Ranjani’s Keeravani, tanam by both RG and HNB were the other major highlights. The RTP was just superb!

It is always a great pleasure to listen to Bhaskar. On Sunday, he was in top form, following, pausing(perfect timing!) and excelling in his returns in all aspects. His swara returns on several instances earned him well deserved applause from the very appreciative rasikas.

In his first visit to Auckland, Sairam captured the audience with his excellent support and a fantastic tan. Aucklanders follow percussionists quite closely due to the large number of the ever growing Mridangam students. That Sairam received a thunderous applause at the end of his tani says a lot!

Overall it was a concert that will be spoken about for a long time!

Wow, I did not realize that NZ had a big Indian community as well. Have carnatic artists been regularly touring NZ? Is the audience comprised of the Indian community or do the local New Zealanders also attend? CM is truly getting more global!

Not only is there a big rasika community in NZ, but there are also a number of our forumites who are CM rasikas, teachers and organizers in NZ. Sam Swaminathan, MV, Sreecons, rasikasnz are all based in NZ (I'm sure they can add much more about the history of CM in NZ here). There are also many Sri Lankan Tamil participants in CM activities (as in the UK, Australia and Canada) in addition to the greater Indian diaspora.

There are some lovely reviews of previous concerts in NZ in some earlier threads.

NZ has a pretty long history of holding carnatic music events, over 25 years, which is 'long' considering NZ is far far away from the motherland of carnatic music :-) Spearheaded by a few Sri Lankan Tamils and Mysoreans, Tyagaraja Aradhana was the first carnatic event to be celebrated in one of the homes and thats how it all started! Now we have the New Zealand Carnatic Music Society (into its 15th year), several schools and other organisers arranging concerts, music exams, workshops and lec-demos. This March is pretty busy on the carnatic music front. Rasikas NZ hosted RG, WOMAD hosted Sudha and NZCMS is hosting Abhishek. Its pretty much full on and we rasikas just love it :-)

Sreecons/RasikasNz,
Rasikas NZ, WOMAD and NZCMS are three organizations , WOW. That means more chances for more artists to participate. Just curious did you come with the name Rasikas NZ , after we having this site. I see some time back there was an organization in US called richmondrasikas , i am assuming all these are offshoot after the website rasikas.org becoming popular ? Am i right?

Also HN Bhaskar being the disciple of the great MSG , it would have been a wonderful tribute to shri msg considering mohanam is a very favourite raga of shri msg. By the way was our sam swaminathan there in the concert?

WOMAD is a world music and dance festival. It stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance. Sometimes Indian artistes are featured.

It is held at various places in the world (Since 1982, WOMAD has held over 160 festivals, creating events in twenty-seven countries and islands all over the world, including: Abu Dhabi, Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, UK, and the United States of America - source http://www.womad.org )

The WOMADelaide (also called WOMAD) is held in Adelaide, Australia every year.

@rajeshnat: We came up with the name in 2008 to make it generic so everyone/every rasika would be a part of it . . sorry but at that time we didnt know about this forum. . . .
Bhaskar performing for us in the first concert this year was truly special as you very well put it. We usually release a souvenir booklet at every concert. At this concert, we dedicated an article written by Prof Purnaprajna Bangere (disciple of Sri HK Narasimhamurthy) titled, "MSG, I knew", as a tribute to Sri MSG. The Mohanam on that day was top class :-)
Sam was unable to attend this concert.
