to-day morning at 9 am I happened to see the live telecast of the mummurtigal music festival. It appears that the music festival is being held for a week now. Tiruvarur Bhakthavathsalam mridangist seems to be the driving force.lots of concerts to enjoy for the residents of the sacred city.
But today's mass singing was awful.Bombay sisters, Sowmya.Dr Narmada, Usha rajagopalan were Some celebrities I could identify.Veteran T.K> Murthy played mridangam for a short while.
Though today was Pushyam Sri thyagaraja jayanthi, they could have included in this Mummurtigal festival a couple of Sastri's and a couple of Dikshithar's instead of the usual pancharathnakrithis which has become too stale not only for the rasikas but also apparently for the musicians as well.May be it is time to think of a new pattern different from Thiruvaiyaru.
