I had been hearing that he is next superstar, that his voice is as good as Balamurali - so I decided to give it a try. The first item, Ninnukori mohana varna, was expertly rendered and his voice indeed was sparkling. The next, Mundu Venu in Darbar, was also sung with lot of gusto. The following 2 items, paridana in bilahari and sukhi evaro, were a disappointment to me, since my mind always goes back to Chembai or MMI's versions. It seemed to me like he was adding too much gamakas and tried too many tricks in the swarakalpana. Next came what seemed like the main item - a boring kalyani alapana that didn't hold my attention for too long. I didn't stay for the rest of the concert. I went home and listened to a real Kalyani by BMK to erase what I had just heard from AR.
My verdict is that a good voice doesn't always guarantee high musical content in a concert - perhaps an inner 'X' factor/manodharma plays a more crucial role. It will be a while since I will attend his concert again.
