Yesterday I had an opportunity to listen to western band by boys and girls in the age group between 8 and 14. Girls out numbered boys. The session was divided into two sections as wind and string instruments. The program was arranged by Bullis Charter School at Los Altos CA. 75 percent were with Indians and Chinese. Participants were introduced to the audience by the band master and the performance started exactly at 18 30 hr . Program commenced with wind instruments viz flute, clarinet and saxophone. Two pieces w/o percussion and three with drums. Then came the performance of string instruments initially with Guitar and then Violin. While playing Guitar boys and girls showed their vocal skill too. During violin part, one piece was only with plucking of strings. It reminded me Kunnakudi's style. Three songs with drums. I could be able to identify the resemblance of Kathana kuthukalam, Mohanam and Sankarabaranam in their performance. In general the entire program was filled with sweet nuances through out. The program came to an end at 19 45 hrs . At the end there was a standing ovation which was gracefully acknowledged by the students. It was a strange experience and hence I share this with the forum.

Re: Western Music Band
Thanjavooran,
I see you are visiting CA now. Great to hear from a grandpa about a children's school band in California. A few of them might have also been in the Cleveland CM competitions and performances!
Children and music is a good combination. Brings back those years when I sat at the edge of my seat to watch my children and their schoolmates perform!
