Dr.M.Narmadha's hindustani Violin solo concert @ Thrishur

Post by jananinarayanan »

Hi Friends,

I had been to Hindustani violin solo concert at Thrishur which was performed by Dr.M.Narmadha.
I writing this review little late sorry I was held up with some cold and fever.

Hearing accomplished violinist DrNarmadha perform. Hindustani violin was a virtual voyage through ecstasy..the pure notes in their melodic superlatives touched my soul.
me..just posting her review that appeared today...

Event ‘Monsoon Dance Music Art Fest 2013’ in Thrissur showcased an interesting mélange of danceand music performances. G.S. Paul

Music lovers had a great day when M. Narmadha, accompanied by Fazal Qureshi on the tabla, enthralled them with a sterling performance of Hindustani violin recital – the only music programme in the festival. Dr. Narmadha opened with raga Puriya, bringing out all its shades through Bada khayal in Ek taal (vilambit) and the Chota khayal in Teen Taal (drut).

Emotive was the delineation of the thumri‘Kaun gali gayo shaam’ in Kamaj. Alaap and Jod in raga Durga was followed by Masit-khani Gat in seven-beat Rupak taal. Together with Fazal’s accompaniment, the number elicited generous applause from the audience. It was delightful to listen to Swati’s bhajan ‘Ramachandra Prabho’ in Sindhubhairavi. She wound up with a taraana in the same raga, which she presented as a tribute to her late father and Guru M.S. Gopalakrishnan.

Friends Dr.M.Narmadha's violin solo it was excellent to listen. It was raining so much still I could see a housefull audience comming in for her concert.
She is the real star. :-BD (*) Keeping up her tradition and also showing her originality in her violin performance. :-BD

Thanks and regards

Thanks for the report. Thrissoor seems to be a happening place for performing arts!

It's great that Dr. Narmadha is holding aloft the torch of excellence in classical music her father is so well known for. I wish her well in her role as his worthy successor.

Dr Narmadha is truly the torch bearer of the Parur Bani. Excellent command over both Hindustani and Carnatic styles and at the same time maintaining the integrity of each style uncompromisingly. Hope she performs a few more Hindustani concerts every year.

@Sachi Sir-

Thrissur (Trichur/Thrishoor) is considered as the Cultural Capital of Kerala. It is a podium for the several big temple events Thrishoor Pooram, Aaraattupuzha Pooram, Irinjalakuda Utsavam, Peruvanam Utsavan to llist out a few.
These festivals boast of showcasing the vibrant temple arts of kerala. Panchavaadyams, Chenda Melams, Kathakalis, Mohiniaatton, Chackyarkoothus etc are just like Mridangam, Violin, Vocal etc in Chennai. There are major sabhas in Thrishoor, the prominent one being the Vivekananda Sangeeta Sadas, Mohan Sir used to be the chief of it. (Sri Trichur R Mohan). Every other kid learns some form of art...

I too belong to Irinjalakuda, Thrishoor which is on the World UN Cultural map.

If you already knew this info, please ignore.... :)

"I wish her well in her role as his worthy successor..." Corporate stuff??? :p

Many may not know that Irinjalakkuda has the largest temple in Kerala and the deity is Sri Bharata, younger brother of Sri Rama. There is a special naivedyam for the Lord there and that is the brinjal naivedyam, called the vazhudangA vazhipADu, which is supposed to cure stomach aches. Once, Chembai was suffering from severe stomach ache. He went to Irinjalakkuda and performed the brinjal vazhipADu and consumed it. He was cured of the ailment. Chembai promptly wrote to the temple authorities about this miraculous cure. The temple still has his letter. Many may not know that N.C.Vasantakokilam lived in Irinjalakkuda for some years during her young age, though she belonged to Nemmara in Palakkad district. These two are the connections of Irinjalakkuda to CM.

BTW, raghavt, do you know when the Kathakali utsavam is conducted in Irinjalakkuda this year?

hi Ravisri

The fact that NCV belonged to Nenmara is news. I am from Nenmara too, would you know anything more about where she was in Nenmara, my grandmother is with me at 98 years who is from Puthu gramam in Nenmara. Have not heard her mention this name
For others, the temple is also known as the Koodalmanikkyam temple http://www.koodalmanikyam.com/legend.html
this locale has a strong association with Koodiyattam, the doyen Ammannur Madhava Chakyar was from Irinjalakkuda.

Hi @raghavt,@RaviSri,@advaitin,

You guys really have a lot of info about the temples in Kerala, etc.
I am sure if you have a separate blog topic with heading "Culture at Kerala"or "Temples and Festivals conducted at Kerala",it would fetch you lot of name and many people would be benefited with that information. :-B

It is better to talk about Kerala temples in separate topic rather than discussing anything more about in Temples and Festivals conducted at Kerala :-? in "Dr.M.Narmadha's hindustani Violin solo concert @ Thrishur" topic.

It totally out of context here.I am sure you guys understand.

It would be great if you can contribute (If you know/if you have attended/If you know anyone who have attended this concert) anything related to "Dr.M.Narmadha's hindustani Violin solo concert @ Thrishur" in this blog post. :)

Regards
Janani

I too agree with @jananinarayanan

Dr.M.Narmadha is a great artiste and that concert at Thrishur I had attended.
I was just excellent, out of the world.
I have not seen such jam-packed audience for any instrumental concert that too they wanted to hear more Hindustani.
It was Hindustani and not a Karnatak concert .For Hindustani soooo much Crowd that too who were not bored, not yawning just glued to her music :-BD .
Really it shows how gud her music is and how much hard work she has put in to get that output. simply awesome. :ymapplause:

Ravisri,
Thanks for your post. All new to me--and I'm sure Dr. Narmada wouldn't mind either. She's a rasikA too among us, and is familiar how a concert review here can take detours, just as in other threads!

She obviously stole the hearts of Trissur folks! Though I have heard her play hindusthAni rAgAs in a CM concert, this is new to me. Hope she's going to give a few HM music concerts during the season.

Thank you for the post. I am so delighted to see that Dr. M. Narmada is also performing Hindustani Music concerts. In my opinion, it is not easy for musicians to practice and play both CM as well as HM with clarity and disambiguation. How beautifully Shri MSG brought out the best from both musical worlds! Much kudos to Dr. Narmada and wish her the best for concerts to come.

No offense meant--none at all, but your moniker is a bit disconcerting. Of course, we all have the freedom to choose the name we like most! Folks choose rAgA names and more. The variety in names on the forum makes it all very interesting . Apart from the lovely rAgA names, braindrain and ignoramus intrigue and entertain, thanjavooran and cmlover come under our origins and interests. There are bird names, the lord's names and all are pleasing.

I'm sure you are inspired by the sage and 'kanchi periva' reflects your devotion to him.
However, when your comment comes after his name, it makes me (may be, it's just me) feel a bit uneasy. I made a conscious effort to separate mahA periyavar from the comment of yours which followed. Hope it doesn't displease you that I said it.

In the end, what name you feel most comfortable with, matters. Ignoramus, I mean, ignore me!

Apologies to Dr. Narmadha for steering this thread away from the concert once again :(
