Saturday in chennai usually has quite a lot of concerts . Having more choice always suits me as I had to work yesterday and concerts starting near my home was all the more better. I narrowed to choose one of the two musicians of LA lakers domicile. Ramakrishna Murthy at ramarao hall at 6pm which got started at 06:25 pm vs sandeep at vanimahal at 7pm which had a virudu before.I exercised my choice preferring an early start and avoiding virudu .

One extremely heartening thing is if you closely follow all sabhas/halls in chennai , there are two kinds of sabhas/halls. One is of those ragasudha / ps high school/skgs types where there is perennial concert whereas halls like ramarao hall (where NCA conducts during season) seldom have concerts during off season. It is good omen to have concerts in halls in non perennial halls after all many perennial sabhas/halls have their own cliched artists leaving considerable lot without opportunities. In the hindu column it was just put Music concert with four names with the a name of mrudangist whom i did not know . I was also looking forward to hear M vijay who is the disciple of Varadu . As I entered the hall, I did know that it was organized by Sundararaman family .

RK murthy in the last few years is steadily and surely gaining acceptance. I have watched/heard him quite a lot most notably his 4 hr concert . This concert was not that appealing as any of his previous . There was a definite dent in quality especially prior to sub main , reached its peak in the main and kind of settled well with tukkadas .

Murthy could have planned much better in his first 4 numbers .It was 4 successive numbers in the first 25+ minutes. I could not get that aha feel in the first quarter , the violin was not heard . kAnada varnam which was very good only till second speed . From the contours of second speed varnam and nAttai second half which has few faster turns with lines like sama gana vinodha , I could notice murthy straining his voice and at times the voice was bit caving in . In short he just did not hit a comfortable zone in my ears.

The submain (poorvikalyani )settled well , and the neraval was very well done . Poorvikalyani neraval was in a different line than the usual line of paramuthmudu and the swaras that came after was well presented. The two fillers the slower one was very good in kedaram reminding me of KVN and the faster one was not fast enough (triloka mathA) could notice a bit of adjustment problem in kalapramanam with the entire team.On a side note may be this is the first time I am hearing Triloka mAtananu as a fast filler in a live concert.

8A. upachAramOOLanu (R N S T) - bhairavi - T
9 mins alapana 6 mins violin return
8 mins neraval in "kapata nAtaka suTra "
9 mins swaras
8B. tani for 20 mins

Speech break

9. iDadu padam thooki - kamAs - psivan
10. chandra chooda - darbAri kAnadA -PD
11. tom tom tada -thillana - poornachandrikA - Poochi
12. pavamAna

The main in bhairavi reached the quality of Murthy that I had experienced before. He adopts a balanced approach of main like KVN where you find bit neravified neraval , alapana and swaras not something where he goes little Extra (which I prefer). I am bit biased with bhairavi as a main and this krithi I love .Upachaamoolanu was sung with lot of vigour and balance . There was sampradaya suddham. After tani there was a speech break and his numbers in tail were very good , particularly darbAri emote was very nice.

The violinist M vijay disciple of Varadu and rajasekar played well only in bhairavi , possibly he was handicapped a bit by Murthy in the first 4 numbers where he did not have that much role to play. I am looking forward to have a better second impression of Vijay.

The percussion team was excellent . Anirudh was peaking throughout - kind of the best in the whole team . I have seen him as a kid when he was with TK Murthy and he was playing a very matured tani and rotating exceptionally well with a much younger mrudangist.

About Hariharan- the mrudangam artist:
--------------------------------------
His guru Patri was there and the chief guest was KV prasad. I have not heard KV Prasad speaking , but I felt when he spoke his personality was very much in line with his playing .In the sense no ahA ahA O O sky high praises . But at the same time he really encouraged . He related few anecdotes where he has played with jambhavans who are connected with those in stage .He said how they have laid out the path and politely advised these youngsters should not lose that path.

My impression about hariharan is that he has quite an amazing weight(the sheer azhuttam) in his play.He was very watchful and appreciated all the artist with the keen eye and ear, which even KV prasad observed. I liked his first half of play a lot , lot of contrasting patterns that I typically associate with srimushnam raja rao was indeed there. I could not see Patri's thoppi excellence yet . But nevertheless the lad has potential . The tani was very good though in the main krithi with rotation he was bit tentative to grab from anirudh. One of the speakers said Hariharan learned from nandakumar whom I donot know yet , only in the last 6 months he is learning from Patri . I was glad to hear few patterns that had the amazing awesome patri like touch more in the half prior to bhairavi main. This young lad hariharan sundararaman is based out of US and must be less than 17 years .

Murthy has to watch out a bit on not over straining his voice .
Overall a very good concert for 2 hours and 30 minutes of concert and 20 minutes extra speech.

Rajesh, the niraval for the pUrvikalyAni kRti should have been at the phrase 'paripUrNa nishkaLanka niravadhi sukhadAyakA'.
