mumbai G shilpA@skgs on Oct 07th,2013
-----------------------------------------------
Violin : Mumbai G shilpA (disciple of shri LGJ)
Vilon : SudhA R S Iyer
Mrudangam : prasanna karthikeyan

Concert duration/Day : 1 hr and 50 minutes /Monday
Concert Type : Nirvana (no concert to follow)
Hall : kAmakoti hall / mini hall of skgs

...
...
3. sEshAchala nAyakam(R N S) - varAli - MD
4 mins neraval in "aravinda paTra nayanam govindam uraga sayanam"
4 mins swaras
4. durgA devi dhurita niVArini - navarasa kannada - HMB
5. mrithu bhooshani suramrithu bHAshini - amrithavarshini - mangalam ganapathy
6. kaligiyuNtE (R N S T) - keeravAni -T
8 mins alapana and 6 mins violin return
5 mins neraval in "bhAguga shri raghu rAmuni padamula"

In SKGS ,One can always see a lot of upcoming musicians performing , that too from Lalgudi school which generally takes a considerable share . I googled prior to attending the concert and found that Mumbai G ShilpA has learnt significantly in mumbai (balamani and few other teachers) and also learnt recently from shri LGJ.

I went about 15 minutes late and as I entered the submain violin alapana return of varAli was on.ShilpA started with seshAchala nAyaka in a fairly uphill rAgA varAli.There was always a touch of melody in her voice but varAli's rAga swaroopam needs more of a karadu moradAna sangathis , i thought she would give that in neraval and swaras , but it did not turn out that well .

The next was a rare krithi durgA devi she sang quite well, it took me quite a while to realize that the rAgA was navarasa kannada - it was my late identification , certainly the musician sang well. The next was a rare one , I am not sure if I got the words and the raga right , a sprinkle of swaras would have interested me there , I could notice in general from here that shilpa concentrates more on getting a well ironed and practised rendition of krithi .Till now there was not much change or dynamics in tempo . Keeravani alapana and krithi were measured , for a brief time in swaras she came out well with a change in tempo . It was roughly 07:20 pm when the tani got over (the concert started at 6pm) and i thought she may be planning for either a detailed slokham /viruththam or a rtp.

7. jaya thungA tharaNgi gangE ?? - ?? - ???(had a phrase paramahamsA)
8. kaakai chiraginilE - rAgamAligA - bharathiyAr
9. eNNa thavam - kApi - p sivan

10. abhang?? "maaze manorA " - subhapantuvarAli?? - ???
11. tungA teera virAjam - sAlagabhairavi + Ahirbhairavi - kamalesha vittala
12. eruvAi karuvAi?? - behAg - Thirruppugazh(AGN)??

13. gOvindam ina gOpika - bhAgeshri - ????
14. taka dheem ta dheem .... tanjam (thillAnA) - dEsh - LGJ
15. mangalam

The stream of tukkadas were just passable ,incidentally one more thing i noticed is there was not a very perceivable interaction from shilpa with the artist , she appeared way too modest in the stage . In the tukkadas many were new . I got a feel of bhajan like concert through out in kaakai chiranginile and enna thavam . Mumbai artists come with abhangs and usually abhangist from mumbai have a powerful voice like aruna and rg sisters etc , but shipa's abhang just did not lap up the usual chennai a bang crowd to behave like a frenzy mob (I am assuming maaze manOrA is an abhang). behAg thirrupuggazh had a nice enunciation of lyrics and the bhAgeshri tukkada that followed was new and came out well . She ended with a Desh thillana which was good.

The violinist Sudha Iyer was just good , perhaps she had to go in line with a fairly same tempo of the vocalist .The mrudangist played just good . I was hearing all three for the first time. I keep hearing many young to fairly getting established musicians as "upcoming artist" , but most of them generally sing as well established artist , but yesterday after few years I really heard three "upcoming artists".

On the positive side ,Shilpa has a good emote with nice enunciation of lyrics and shruthi sense .On the not so positive side ,She certainly has to sing with a more tight varying leash for each of the krithis - almost all krithis had the same gait and punch(perhaps it was a tiring day prior to the concert) . Hoping to hear a better concert of shilpa in the future.

Overall a good concert for 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Just forgot to mention , it would have been nice if Smt shilpA announced the composers of krithis atleast those that were very rare. She did not announce even one of them.

jaya tunga tarange has been sung in hamsadhvani by Bombay Jayashri here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rTJcl37YuQ
In SuraTi by Balamuralikrishna here:
http://www.general-files.org/download/g ... e.mp3.html
It has been listed under kuntalavarALi also.
MajhA manOratha is generally sung in mishrayaman.

Wow, Rajesh. You impressive me with the breadth of your listenership!
I came across this artiste's name for the first time when watching the Lalgudi tribute videos produced by SB Khanthan.

I imagine she would have sung tunga tarangE in Hamsadhwani (occasionally set to madhyama sruti also), probably very similar to the version posted by L-ji.

The kuntalavarali version I have heard in a commercial release by Sangeetha Sivakumar. You can find a short clip here: http://www.charsur.com/index.php/tunga- ... 16866.html

The kunthala varali version was in vogue in our days.
