Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, London - 24th February 2007

Manorama Prasad - vocal
Balu Raghuraman - violin
Bhavani Shankar - mridangam
R.N. Pratap - ghatam

1. chalamEla - Natakuranji varnam
2. gam ganapate - Hamsadhwani - Muthiah Bhagavatar
3. nannu karuninchi - Sankarabharanam - Garbhapurivasar (RNS)
4. tAye tripura sundari - Shuddhasaveri - Periaswami Thooran
5. nidhichAla sukhamA - Kalyani - Tyagaraja (RNS)
(grahabhedam to Mohanam)
6. Tani avartanam
-Intermission-
7. RTP - Amritavarshini - Adi (2 kalai)
Pallavi line: 'varshini amritavarshini kshidrUpiNi samraskshiNi'
8. gOvinda ninnA - Janasammodini - Purandara dasa
9. viSvESvara - Sindhubhairavi - Swati Tirunal
10. kuyile kuyile unakku ananta kOTi namaskAram - Yamunakalyani - Surabhi?
11. sAgara Sayana vibho - Bageshri - MDR
12. rAma nAma - Chenchuriti? - Purandara Dasa
12. tillAna - ni ri ni ri ga ma ga ri sa - Purvi - T. Vaidyanatha Iyer
13. mangalam

I enjoyed especially 3. and 11. (a favorite of mine). Good concert, but I found the choice of ragas a bit biased towards melas 28, 29 & 65. The Kalyani to Mohanam grahabhedam in 5. was done nicely.
During the RTP swaras, she switched midway from 2-kalai to 1-kalai. I haven't seen this done before. Is this kosher?

I wasn't sure of the composers of 10. and 12. Can someone provide input please.

A few complaints about the concert setting:
a) lighting: I don't quite understand why lights are turned off during a CM concert. During the vote of thanks, they even thanked the lighting man! Leave the lights on and that's all that's required. The artiste was peering with some difficulty into the audience, to get a feel for the reaction.
b) intermission: wasted close to half an hour with this silly time wasting break, and then the artiste announced she didn't have enough time to do justice to the RTP! Intermissions spoil the lovely mood that's created, and have no place in a CM concert.
Who is listening??

#10 is a film song from Manidan. The song was sung by MLV. I don't think it is a Bharatiyar song.

Radha Badri and Ganesh (of the Ganesh Kumaresh duo) have rendered versions of this song in the more recent movie 'Dance like a man' - one of them is pictured as an excellent 'abhinaya' piece by Shobhana, and the other on a so-so Anoushka Shankar. I think it a very traditional 'padam' like number. Surabhi may have been the lyricist for the other songs in the movie 'Maidan', but I doubt if this is by him.

A rather poor choice - amritavarshini after kalyANi!

I asked this:
>During the RTP swaras, she switched midway from 2-kalai to 1-kalai. I haven't seen this
>done before. Is this kosher?
Any answers to this question?

isnt it routine for artist to shift from 4 - kalai to 2 - kalai to 1 - kalai and/or change nadais etc during a RTP? i have seen this happen in most pallavis....

Many times, Tisra Triputa is reduced to Misra Chapu and Khanda Triputa to Sankeerna Chapu....

Vijay, can you elaborate? How is that normally done? Like start with Tisra triputa and then during kalpanaswaram change it to half the avarthana length to fit to a misra chapu? Do they also change the kriya and beats points to match the misra chapu?

Here is an example of this being done by DK Pattammal and DK Jayaraman - I presume as kosher as they come. The pallavi starts in adi-2 kalai (tisra gati) and towards the end, about 14-15 minutes into the clip, they change to 1-kalai, with a succession of quick-fire ragamalika swarams to round it off.

Also of note is the skillful switch from tisra to chatusra gati and back again.

Yup you've got it pretty much right...the kriya is changed as well
