Choosing instrument to learn!

Post by praveenanekere »

Hi everyone, I love music, I spend most of my time immersed in music. From childhood I wanted to learn Carnatic music.

Which instrument should I learn? I want to experience Carnatic music to fullest extent...

First with open and uncritical mind listen to all the instruments used by the Maestros in Carnatic Music-Veena/Chirtra Veena; flute/clarinet/nadaswaram;violin/viola;mandolin/guitar, recordings and public performances over a period of minimum twelve months. Realize the feelings of best emotive potentiality of the instrument and belief. Talk to teacher(s) with high proficiency or mastery of the interested instrument and seek their advice on your inherent talent and learning and practicing potentiality. Make the firm decision. Start learning and practice of chosen instrument with dedication, commitment and passion for achieving excellence- perfection in communicating and the delivery of your inner feelings and emotions and in total alignment with manodharma/creativity, after coming under the guidance of a great teacher. Achieve self satisfaction. Perform and partake the pleasure you have derived with rasikas-both Pandita and Pamara. Delivery and feed back of satisfaction by the rasikas motivate you to achieve more and more and to become the Maestro or Great Maestro. Before all this achieve means of income to secure resources for a minimal and comfortable living.

Which instrument should I learn?
The one that you enjoy listening to.

The one that you like to hold.

The one that interests you.

The one you want to learn

Nobody else can answer these questions for you.

@munirao2001: Thank you very much for your input. You have given me good starting point, direction and lot of inspiration too.

@Nick H: Thank you for the inputs Nick. And, sorry about the way I have put the question. It should have been some thing like - "How do I choose the instrument..."

I still feel that my answer applies. Perhaps one can learn to love an instrument, but doesn't there need to be some sort of special attraction in the first place if one is to have real enthusiasm? An inspiration?

The process is -One listens-sounds attracts, excites, appears mysterious, emotionally appeals, start wondering at the bewildering potentialities. A role model player/musician/composer's rich and appealing music kindles the desire and drives to acquire skills. One's own independent experiments also encourages. Peers feed back motivates. Developing deep interest, skill, commitment and dedication one starts the never ending journey of exploration and gratification. A good teacher guides, enhances the talent and achievement potentiality. A Great Maestro inspires. Rasikas bestow sense of security. Ones own acquired knowledge and practice helps, becomes both obsession and passion and one is on the path of realization and achievement of excellence and perfection.
