At the very outset, let us congratulate .Purushottaman for getting an award “Shanmukha Sangeetha ShiroNmani. I don’t know whether it will be given here. It means the award conferred by BSU or some other org. His playing is always “above par” and “accompanying” really well with the team.

It was another evening at Naradha Gana Sabha, for BSU with MB and their concert is always full of quality. List goes as follows:
He started with Dhyana slokam of Rudra kavacham

“Shantahm padhmasanastham… pArvatheesam namAmi” followed by
-umayOr bhagaNe- papasasam Sivan- Nattai – swaram in the same line.

- Bahudhari rAgam – Sakala shanty karamu-sarvEsha, nEE pai bhakti- sarvEsha – AnnamAcharya tuned by Sri.NedanUri .

- Dwaithamu sukamA- Ritigowla- Thyagarajar

-Ramapriya- Sub main- followed by “SmarAmyaham sadA rAhum”- Dikshitar, navagraha kriti on rAgu graham, swaram-same line

-sAma Ragam for 1 minute followed by “Etulaina bhathi”- Thyagarajar

-Teliyaleru rAma- Denuka-Thy.

-Natta kurinji- RTP- Pallavi being “vArALa Sri Surapatim Bhaja vishwanatham saranAgatha vatsalam”- Abheri,….., Kedharam ……. (4 ragams, only 2 was sure)
ItadE nAyEE lokamu- sALaka bhairavi- Bhadrachala Ramadass- tuned by Sri.Suri babu,

PUrNa bodhoham sadAnanda- sadAshiva brahmEnra- behag- tuned by Sri.Suri babu

PushpayAgam- in Tilang-AnnamAcharya- They annoh unced it was in praise of Pushpa yAgam being performed at Tirumala. This was performed yesterday. So, they rendered this.

rAma DaivamA-Surutti-Mangalam –Thyagarajar.

Lot has been written about MB. sahitya clarity, rendition and sowkhyam- they live for these. 2 hours and 30 minutes concert was worth of a listening. Nice to see Sri.Vijay siva attended the concert and chatting with the duo after the concert.

One “madi” kutcheri attending another “madi” kutcheri.

EmbAr kannan was, as usual, superb. They had to rush the RTP because of paucity of time, Pallavi and raga mAlika were completed in 7 minutes paving way for Tani. They did not expect the concert to go till 9.30 PM. Otherwise, they could have reduced one or two tukkadas and concentrated more on RTP.

Tani was brilliant. I have heard Raju playing mridhangam many times. Always a nice accompanist with perfection.

On Saturday, 9th Nov, Trichur Brothers gave a concert that will be remembered for a long time. I have heard couple of concerts and my respect goes high every time.

One difference, I noticed, compared to MB is that for Trichur, the Raga alapana is shared by both. Both of them “dwelve” in to the rAga very well and carry the raga beautifully. Like a relay-race.

When I was entering the hall, Kapi (Ragam) was offered to the rasikas. It was followed by “AnyAyamu-a kriti of Thyagarajar.

Nonoru vilayattu- navarasa Kannada- PS

Subha pantuvarali (SBP)- Ragam- Satyanarayanam- MD. Swaram “Matsya kUrma varAhi”

Tunbam nergayil- Desh

Madhava mAmava-Narayana Teerthar-NeelAmbari.

kAna vEndamO- Sriranjani- PS

SBP- The 15 minutes Alapana had “reminiscence” of Abhisekh Raghuram. Brigas, AkAra sAdhagam and speed- everything was there. Even Song and the Swaram- had enough sangathis.

2.45 PM concert , if not taken up properly, would make the rasikas to go for a good sleep. Trichur did not allow this. He carried the rasikas along with them.

Pamphlet said that Trichur Mohan has accompanied Chembai Vaidynaha Bhagavathar. Amazing stuff. Nice to see these duo has been singing under the watchful eyes of their father.

Nerkunram sekhar, disciple of Great Harishanker, was playing very good along with Kandadevi.

The Shanmukha award, I believe, is by the Shanmukhananda Sabha of Bombay.

Thanks for the detailed review. Just a small clarification on the pallavi. I heard it as follows -- "VArANasim pura vasim bhaja Vishwanatham”.
Can you and/or other rasikas in attendance please confirm? Thanks.

Nice review and thanks for the same grsastrigal. Would definitely attend Malladi Brothers' concert in the near future. Really like their voice timbre and their focus on melody, sowkhyam, chaste pronunciation is refreshing.

I think it must be 'vArANasI purapathim bhaja vishvanAtham'. It is from the shlOkam 'vishwanAthAshtakam' the starting line is 'gangA taranga ramaNIya jaTA kalApam'.

I was thinking "Punavasu" pallavi only. When I heard it again I got confused. Request some of you to help me after listening to this. Ramkumar starts with varAlashri.

Attended Thrissur Bros concert.

The previous ones before kaapi were

Jaya jaya padmanaabha - manirangu - excellent rendition with svarams.

a kriti in adaaNa with svarams.

Though the renditions were good I feel the raagas manirangu,adana and kaapi in succession could have been avoided.

The raagams of kaapi and SPvaraali were good.the one with beard had an excellent manodharmam.But the finishing of SPV by the clean shaven marred the grand edifice they built.It will be better if the bros.apply certain restraint in raagam building.A good concert that had all the chances of turning into an excellent one.

It is B.S.Purushothaman and not P.S.P also Nerkunam sankar not sekhar.
