Hi
This is a rare raga but very beautiful one. Am learning Dandamu Pettenura song currently so i want to know more about this raga.
Anybody who has any recording for Balahamsa where it has been expanded and sung as a submain or main or RTP etc, request you to please share that with me.
Basically am looking for a good aalapana for the raga and some swaras etc to understand how it moves. I tried in internet but could not find much.
Anyone who has some recording please oblige me by uploading it in Sangeetapriya or 4shared.
Thanks
harish

Re: Balahamsa ragam
hii.. i too recently fell in love with balahamsa bigtime..u get really good recordings in sangeethapriya.org... one of Smt nithyashree really stands out . she has also sung swaram.. i suppose another recording of shri MDR contains ragam for about 3 min... i think submain would be a long shout.. maybe u can try it as a sub sub main coz though the scope is there u always tendto get stuck at the passage MRMGS which u cant avoid!!!

To learn a raga on how it moves and its various proyogas, one has to learn and master the varnam. Here is a link of the varnam sung leisurely by Shri SRJ.

Listen to this varnam about a 1000 times and you will understand, this ragam.

A beautiful major composition is Neela Lohita Ramani, navavarnam in Balahamsa by Oothukadu Venkata Kavi. A video is available on http://www.venkatakavi.org/ovk/audio-video.html (5th video). It is the second song starting around 10:48. No alapana there though.

Re: Balahamsa ragam
Thanks all
i will surely listen a lot to the varnam - this is a v good suggestion
and also hear Nithyasree's Dandamu (i guess that's the one you are talking about - i don't remember any alapana for that one only swaras and that audio quality was very poor)
i do like Neela Lohita Ramani - but it goes up and down frequently and also moves fast and slow making it a very complex song to learn
Another of the beauties in this raga is Vandalum Varattum (GKB) sung expertly by S Sowmya - i think the alapana for that is also available in google but that is a wonderful alapana but poor audio quality - still it gets on to the raga very very well
