Tiruvarur Music Trinity Commemoration Sabha, 1954

Post by Pratyaksham Bala »

.
"December 23, 1954: Memorial to music trinity

"The Tiruvarur Music Trinity Commemoration Sabha, with the object of promoting the development of Indian fine arts, has been formed in Tiruvarur. The Sabha has embarked on a scheme to raise suitable memorials to the Trinity of Carnatic music, Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastri at the house where they were born. It was a strange coincidence that these three composers should have been born as contemporaries at Tiruvarur. The Sabha has appealed to musicians, music-lovers and patrons to come forward with their moral and material support in a generous measure."

"July 29, 1955: Memorial at Tiruvarur

"Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.L. Venkatarama Aiyar, Judge of the Supreme Court, has made an earnest appeal to sangeetha vidwans and to lovers of music to contribute their mite for the erection of a suitable memorial to the Trinity of Carnatic music in Tiruvarur. He was addressing a meeting of vidwans and music lovers at the Thyagaraja Mandir in Mylapore, Madras, on July 27, under the auspices of the Sri Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. S. Rajaraman, Treasurer of the Tiruvarur Music Trinity Commemoration Sabha, explained how the Sabha had been formed in response to the wishes of lovers of music with a view to raising a suitable memorial to the Trinity of Carnatic music at Tiruvarur. It was their ambition that the spots at which the three saint-composers were born should be made shrines of pilgrimage for every music lover."

Perhaps, they are referring to the Sri Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam near Madhava Perumal Kovil. There is a sanctum with a statue of Sri Thyagaraja there.

PS. The writer may be making the distinction that the Sri Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam is an organization with its own governing body a la the Music Academy being a membership organization.
