Vocal: OS Thiagarajan
Violin: Parur MA Sundaresan
Mrudangam: Shrimushnam V Rajarao
Ghatam: SV Ramani

Thyagaraja Aradhana was celebrated at the German Hall under the aegis of Indian Fine Arts. The day concluded with a vocal concert by Shri OST

Song list:

1. rA rA mA inti dAka-asAveri-Adi (s)
2. enduku nirdaya-harikAmboji-Adi
3. paritApamu-manOhari-rUpakam (s)
4. gyAna mOsagarAda-poorvikalyani-rUpakam (n,s)
5. heccarigagA rA rA-yadukulakAmboji-k.ekam (n,s)
6. vinarAdana- devagAndhAri-Adi
7. upacAramu-bairavi-Adi (r,n,s,t)
8. uyyAla loogavaiyya-nIlaAmbari-k.cApu
9. pAhi rAma dhoota-vasantavarAli-rUpakam
10. mangalam

The concert started off with a very sublime asAveri sung in madhyama kaalam and few swara exchanges at caranam. harikamboji was a surprise second item. The rarely heard manohari kriti (reminded me of Shri DKJ) was sung with a lot of bhavam. When one was next expecting an alapanai, the artiste chose to sing the kriti gyana mosagarada. A special mention is to be made here about the wonderful neraval done by Shri OST and Shri MAS at paramatmudu. THe neraval was not mechanical and predictable, but revealed the in depth vidwath of the vocalist and the violinist. The swarams were hurried through. Just as this kriti was ending, one could see Dr. VV Srivatsa enter the auditorium and occupy a seat in the 1st row. Next came yadukulakamboji sung in k.ekam (have heard k.capu versions only) in chowka kaalam. WIth devagandhari for a filler, Shri OST launched into what I feel is one of the best bairavi s of all times. 20 mins of sheer bliss with Shri MAS complementing him in every respect. QUite predictably, Upacaramu followed, with neraval and swarams. The tani handled by 2 veterans went on for about 25 mins. It was very nice with the duo rolling in some nice patterns in catusram and tisram. The mohara and korvai ended in a cresendo to thunderous applause. After the tani, the sabha sec spoke very highly of the concert and requested OST to sing inta sowkhyamu. In fact, he sang the pallavi himself. (I really dont know why he had to sing and demonstrate) The vocalist however mentioned that it was already late and he would sing this on another occasion. The concert concluded with two others kritis of thyagabrahmam. One very notable feature was that SHri OST sang all the caranams for the harikamboji kriti and even sang the "pankajakshi" caranam for the mangalam. Overall, a very enjoyable and sublime concert with a haunting bairavi.

Since all the charanas of the harikAmbhOji kriti have different structure (varnameTTu), it is common to sing all the charanas of this kriti.

Minor quibbles but I think it's gnanamOsaga rAdA and heccarikagA rA rA.. :) I am not familiar with the transliteration scheme so someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I think the first kriti should be split as

rA rA mA inTi dAka as opposed to rA rAmA inTi dAka

Infact it is Yechharikaga rA rA and not heccarikagA rA rA. But over the years the Y has been replaced with 'h'
:)

which line was the neraval done?

OST invaribly sings harikambhoji as the second or third song of his concerts. infact, this is the normal slot of harikambhoji in the normal concert-package. It is a time-tested substituent for the Dravid (pantuvarALi). what is the surprise part?

I don't bet my last penny, :D but hechcharikagA rA rA looks correct :)

In kannaDa, we say echcharike, and Arati. In telugu same words become heccharika and hArati ( remember patiki hAratIrE ?)

IT looks the neraval was done in kanakamayamau makuTa kAnti .I think bharath and others(indirectly like me) were interested in the precise neraval line.

I thoughty that the neraval was usually sung at 'ninu jUDa vacchubhagini...karamu chiluka'

I should have been more precise: neraval was done at "ninnu jUda..."
