As a child growing up in a house filled with music lovers, the December season was like the World Cup, the Olympics and every grand slam event combined. From the early 1970s, upwards of ten of us would somehow cram into a Fiat wagon and sabha-hop our way through Mylapore and the "new" Mambalam. Us proud residents of West Mambalam could only refer to T. Nagar by its relative youth and not by its given name. These were well before the days when eating out was de rigeur for a tambrahm family; we made do with home-made puliyodarai and packed idlis between concerts.

Conversations on the drive back would center on topics including KVN's spectacular Poorvikalyani or MLV's heterodox dwi-nadai pallavi, to Lalgudi's amazing return of serve while accompanying Semmangudi, to Trichy Sankaran's tisra nadai variations during an explosive tani. While many of my contemporaries played book cricket, as a child of six I was so busy thinking of concert set lists, I would write up an imaginary schedule of my favourite artistes (with carefully chosen accompaniments) for the entire season. My parents were convinced that I would grow up to become a sabha secretary!

Sometimes we would give a ride back to Sambu mama at the end of a full day of concerts. How we managed to fit an eleventh person into the already overflowing car is still a wonder to me. We would have to periodically stop the car, so he could get rid of his mouthful of pugai-ilai stained betel leaves. Sambu mama was an amazing conversationalist and seemed to have his pulse on the music scene. He was aware of things even before they happened. On one of those trips, Sambu mama told us about this new boy from Madurai with an otherworldly voice. He told us that his sense of layam was so strong that even Mani Iyer agreed to accompany him. He was, of course, referring to the now legendary Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan.

Nostalgia is not new. On these rides, my father and Sambu mama would often reminisce about the 1940s and how they sat on the wall of the Kapali temple to listen to Madurai Mani Iyer. Much has changed in the music world since those days. After a period of self-doubt, Carnatic music has emerged very strongly in this era of the global musician. But despite all the apparent changes, the spirit of the music festival remains strong and resilient as ever.

In two short weeks, my family and I will be embarking on yet another cultural journey to the homeland with the express intention of attending as many concerts as possible at the December music season in Chennai. As the crow flies, it is about 9000 miles to Chennai from where I live presently. It will take me three airport changes and a possible overnight stay in another country before I get there. Listening to forty concerts and lec-dems in a fortnight is well worth this effort and more. But most of all, I really look forward to walking around Mylapore, the old and new Mambalam alike; if just to run into people like Sambu mama to find out what new Carnatic musicians he would like to turn us onto this season.

Ramesh,
This must be very exciting for you to be there in December! I know how much you were looking forward to this trip!
I look forward to read more of your writings!

Uday,
Well written! Yes, we need more instrumental concerts in Chennai and everywhere!

Ramesh and Uday,
Not surprisingly, both your writings reflect your keen minds at this festive musical time of the year.

Yes, even top notch instrumentalists do not draw much of an audience in Chennai, unless they happen to play in fusion concerts. They do play in halls filled with audience when they perform abroad.

Ramesh,
You say: after a period of self-doubt, CM has emerged very strongly in this era of the global musicians. Despite all the apparent changes, the spirit of the music festival remains strong and resilient as ever.

How very true :)

And then there is the experience of finding oneself being the only person to attend a concert .
Often it gets too late to react , since the host has grabbed you by the arm and escorted you to the front seat .
Once I heard the artist ( new to chennai) ( and a friend and that was why I was there ) whisper to her kid - just go on to the other size of the screen and tell me how many you can count in the audience .Out comes the excited kid with five fingers ready and starts counting 1-2-3-4 and bawls Mummy only four
I have captured this moment for posterity for some researcher / biographer who will want to know the pains of pursuing an art form to perform to single digit audiences.

Sometimes I wonder if the Teacher includes this as part of the initiating process to the kid who wants to learn ...
Deariee ..It is always between you and your Art . The rest is incidental

I got this sick feeling again at Bhushany Kalyanramans concert for Kalakruthi - brilliant , sensitive , with impeccable alapanas ( short and long ones ).
This artist is obviously at the peak of her capabilities .
Singing to an audience of Nine , She was singing for herself . I dont think she even noticed any of us .
150 minutes of vasantha varna - karimukha varada - bagayenayya - ninne namiddini ayya - akhilandeswari - ramakathasudharasa - jagadodharana - kurai onrum - a lovely tamil song in ragamalika that went Ketta Poruzh(?) Kudupar
A brilliant start for me .

In the short time I have been savoring the season, I have to say how impressed I was this morning by another rising star, fellow forumite V. Shankaranarayanan. Nagai Sriram added much sparkle to his singing. Skandasubramanian and Gopalakrishnan were added assets.

For those who are interested, Nagai Sriram plays for him again tomorrow morning at Partha at ten.

I will be at Neela Ramgopal's concert at MA at that hour (her concert starts at 9-15)--a full bench concert by the veteran...

I met this gentleman in a concert in Mudhra. Each song he was asking me the ragam and faithfully writing in a note book. After two days, I met him in the same venue in another concert. The conversation went like this.
Friend: Enna sir, Where are you sitting. I could not get the ragams for many of the songs.
Myself": am sitting in the front.
The singer had just finished Sree Subramanyaya Namasthe.
Friend: Sir, What was this song.
Myself: Sree Subramanyaya Namasthe.
Friend: What ragam.
Myself. Kambodi.
Friend: Who is the composer.
Myself: Dikshithar.
Friend: What was the song which flew like a jet
Myself: It is Vara raga laya. I had to repeat three times for his understanding.
Friend. Oho. What is this ragam.
Myself. Chenjukambodi
Friend. Anybody has sung this song.
Myself. Radha Jayalakshmi has given LP. GNB has sung in concerts.
Friend: I will see in the net.
Then I told him about rasikas .org
Friend. Do you write reviews in newspaper.
Myself. No. I do not have connections.
Friend. Yenna Sir I am writing reviews in Tamil newspaper. With your level of knowledge, I would have done wonders.
I was stunned. I could not read his reviews. But the level of knowlledge of the reviewer. (May not be in all the cases).

Very funny :)

The writer misses, though, the fact that yeoman service is always rendered by stalwarts, who often have one hand (not the one they put talam with, of course) encumbered by the bearing of a torch.
