TM KRISHNA ASTHIKA SAMAJAM (FULL CONCERT)

Sri.Kariaikudi Mani organizing this concert through his “Trust” every year and TMK and Gurucharan performs every year and this year too.
Date- 7th Dec 13
Venue- Asthika samAjam, Alwarpet
Rs. 30 donation goes to Sri.Ragu. This must be HMV genius who immortalized the recording of MS’- bhaja Govindham and Vishnu sahasranAmam LP recording.
As the mercury dropped and drizzling continued, I was wondering whether to attend Abhishek in BVB or TMK in this location……
If you go without any expectation, you like TMK. Here, again.
pAhi Sri GirirAja suthE- Shyama Sastri’s beautiful Ananda bairavi was being rendered while entering the hall. He was in his “swaram” and with the climate and open area like Asthika samAjam , Anandha bharavi was truly a “AnandamAna bhairavi”.
Then, he started “HarikAmbodhI” and able return by HNB. After that, he asked HNB to play some other rAga or he told HNB that he would play one more rAgA and continued
with
PantuvarAli- violin-followed by ‘rAmanAtham bhajEham”. kAsi rAmakriya (PV) kriti on roopakam. He took neraval in “tAtakamaya chEla dharam, hatyAdi papa haram”. From I heard and checked, the line should be “tAtakamaya hAra dharam”- golden garland.
Hecharika kA rA rA- Yadukula kAmbodhi- Thyagarajar. (As expected another “safe” kriti)
Kannada Gowla- rAgA alApana followed by “orajUppu chU”-T- neraval in “mAna mincukaina nIku tOcalEka pO-yina vaina mEmi puNya rUpamA”-
SavEri-Tanam- pallavi line
“Kari mora vina lE dha- haruE krishnA”
One kriti, I forgot.
Hari NEE pai- Javali-YamunA kalyAni
After Ananda bhairavi, it was TMK all the way, slow and steady…
NV was asked to play a small tani in between. He politely refused. His mridhangam is always good.
HN Bhaskar was playing as expected, as a pakka vAdhyam to TMK for all his “passenger” kritis, one could not expect miracle from accompaniments.
Tani was good.

What was the other safe krithi? Why is it 'safe'? Why did you expect it? Just curious.

Heccarika YK- is an all time favourite of KVN and is in fact very difficult to sing.

Rsachi- I did not question "hAtaka". He sang "chEla" instead of "hAra". hAra means "garland". As per MD, it is hAra.
You are right. It is another excellant kriti and the song in praise of Ramanatha swAmy (Lord Shiva), worshipped by Sri Rama.
VKM- He sang Ananda bhairavi (slow), after that ramanAtham (slower) and then hercharika (slowest). I wanted to show my irritation and hence, mentioned "safe" (vanjaga pugazhchi....in tamil, you know that). The opposite of "safe" here is "challenging".
I do not demean the importance of hecharika rA.. kriti. My respect to Saint's kritis are known to those who read my posts. Brining the kriti at that point was bit unnerving.
He could have taken a breathtaking kriti with bullet chittaswaram, like nI kelana (devamanohari), sAketha nilayE (kannada) (remember SSI rendering) or nenarunchi...(mAlavi) Least cared about the rasikAs that singing all the kritis in vilambam might irritate. He knew that he coulld only "get up" and go not the rasikAs.

md ramanathan sings the same krithi differently in each concert, and there is the beauty. for e.g. he has sung the super fast padavini so slowly, and it is so beautiful. same with needumurthi (nattakurunji) ...

hATakamaya cEla dharam is not incorrect...in some pAThAntarams it is cEla, while in others it is hAra...hAra is garland, and cEla is vastram, or vasana, or garments...Smt. MSS sings it as cEla dharam. I wondered why hetccarikaga rA rA is a safe kRti...

Maybe I am the exception here, but me think "reviewers" who cant tell wrong from right w.r.t sahitya, should avoid pointing mistakes in sahitya delivery (or at the least approach it gingerly). What was that about living in glass houses

New terminology, indeed--a 'full' concert--to distinguish it from half-given concerts, I suppose.
So, we have what Rajesh calls nirvaNa concerts (to sing in a relaxed way without thinking about the impending 'next' concert), and now, full concerts as opposed to 'half-fulfilled' concerts, as in this case.
RasikAs appreciate bhAvam-filled concerts when bhAvam is contained in what is sung or played on stage, and TMK is very good at this. It has something to do with the music which is presented, and not with anything personal an artiste feels outside of the music. Professionalism does not allow for distracting oneself and the audience from things which are external to the musical context. Heaven knows how difficult it is for musicians to put up with travel woes, bad food (or no food!) and minor illnesses as they go about their business. Of course, if one is really ill, a concert is cancelled.
I am sure TMK has his own valid reasons for cutting the concert hours to half at Vani Mahal, but his audience and accompanists were disappointed, all the same...
