diction in rendering songs by younger artistes

Post by venkat1926 »

I am referring to younger artistes. I have NO business to advice or suggest to established artistes. How much the younger artistes give importance to the clarity of lyrics they sing. Formerly Sirkazhi Govindarajan used to have clear diction in spite of a number of pakka vadyams. M.D.Ramanathan had good diction. I am not able to understand the lyrics when younger artistes sing even if it is In my mother tongue. There are two aspects to this problem. One: the pakka vadyams particularly mridngam dominate sometimes completely subjugating vocalist. Two: there is innate lack of clarity in rendering lyrics by the new artistes. Is this result of padanthara( is this correct expression, I mean the effect their gurus’ way of singing)? Today I heard Jesudas in an internet radio and he was singing 2 Tamil and one Sanskrit song and I can understand every word of the lyric. I am not an expert on musicology or sabha mariyadai and so I do not know whether diction is important or not. I do not have strong views even though as an ignorant rasika I would like very much to understand the lyrics. I am willing to learn important words and phrases in languages other than my mother tongue. In northern Indian music in Khayal perhaps the lyric is not important though in Bhajans words are important. If this is worthy subject I would like to hear from experts. There was a small discussion in 2010 and detailed one perhaps some ten years back
