A very refreshing kutchery by Sri Rama Varma in Sivagami Petachi Auditorium on the 27th of December 2013.
He started with Kamboji varnam, which was sung with great nidhanam setting the stage for a great evening.
The second item was the rare Thyagaraja song in Mayamalavagowla on Shiva, Rakshimpave. This he said he got from his guru Sri. Balamuralikrishna almost twenty five years back from a casette that he chanced upon.
Annapoonre in Sama was very short and melodious.
Kamakshi Amba in Bhairavi followed next in all her glory. This was magnificently rendered connecting the rasikas to the divine music.
A very fast and fresh Raminsuvarevarura in suposhini was a sharp contrast to the Bhairavi. The chittaswaram that he sang which was later added by his guru aptly complimented the song.
The main was Saroruhasane Jaye in Pantuvarali, a Swathi Thirunal krithi. His Manodharma was brilliant, funny and very different from the rest I have heard so far.
The team comprising of Sri S.R. Vinoo on the violin, Sri. Harikumar on the Mridhangam and Sri. Manjoor Unni Krishnan on the Ghatam was a treat to watch and listen. Such an asset to any musician and the thani added a new dimension to the kutchery.
Thukadas that followed were each short, beautiful and sweet, like Sarvam Brahmamayam in Misra Kamas, his classic Sri Rama Namam, Pankajamukha a nottuswaram by Dhikshitar, Rama Rama yena radha and Kunthalavarali Thillana.
His slow paced singing style, melodious voice and amazing team spirit was a treat to watch and listen.
