Listening - Karnatik Music Season - December 2013, Chennai
A few random, positive thoughts on some musicians I heard this season. These include concerts I attended and musicians who shared the stage with me. This is not a comprehensive list of all the artists I heard and not in any specific order. (please ignore typos)
It was humbling to spend time with the music from Rama Ravi and Alamelu Mani – Unpretentious, delicate, serious music.
Savitha Narasimhan was wonderful at the music Academy. A Shankarabharanam that was exquisite. I only wish she sings more and more.
Melakaveri Balaji is not spoken about in the same breath as many other mrdanga vidvans today. But in my book he belongs right up there with all the other wonderful percussionists of this generation. His sense of kalapramana is one of the best.
Manoj Siva - An extremely sensitive artist. I can say without doubt that there is hardly any other mrdanga vidvan who maintains the mrdanga like him. His mrdanga is always tuned perfectly and the balance between the valandalai and thoppi gives his accompaniment a majestic presence.
Sangeetha Sivakumar sang a brilliant concert at The Music Academy, a classy Jayantasena by an outstanding musician.
Shrisundarkumar - One of the most highly skilled percussionists in our country. He can probably play every phrase that any other laya vidvan produces.
Akkarai Subhalakshmi – A sensitive, sincere and skilled violinist, who plays with great ease. Had the pleasure of having her on stage during my Vani Mahal concert, musically a special day for me.
Ramakrishnan Murthy has everything to grow into a wonderful musician. He has his mind in the right place and a sense of the ‘karnatik’ that is rare to find these days.
R. Hemalatha – a serious, committed musician who infuses into her playing a studied reflection. A lovely artist to have as a partner in music.
S. Karthick – Stands tall for his ability to follow every kirtana, neraval, and kalpana svara with the most elegant tone, and phrase.
Amrita Murali - Every time she sings, she places her respect for Karnatik music first. This is what makes her music something to look forward to.
It was good to hear many of my students in concert. I wish them all the very best.

That is a staid comment, grs. Respecting the spouse's talent and expressing it publicly in a tasteful manner is something we should encourage.
The only way he can satisfy his detractors is not to say anything on that front. 8-|
But that would be dishonest too, to withhold writing, even a one liner about Sangeetha, just because of that.

As a performer acknowledging another, I think it should not matter if one is appreciating one's spouse. Nice to see him share his thoughts..

Unfortunately, I was there in that concert....
I respect TMK's opinion. It is his. I should not have made that comment. Sorry.

Just FYI--MSAmma's GREATEST,FONDEST Admirer was Sadasiva Mama.Once sitting next to him in a Kalyana Kutcheri in Chennai in Purasawalkam, amidst the din and roar charecteristic of our wedding receptions,MSAMMA was singing neraval in Sarojadala netri--at the higher octaves when she was singing pitch-perfect,Mama usually a very taciturn person on such matters before youngsters, turns around and exclaims this is Divinity itself!!That her music wasdivinity is no surprise for me but his spontaneous outburst was!!
TMK was right--WHO AMONGST US CAN GENUINELY CLAIM WE ARE BIASLESS WHEN IT COMES TO REVIEWING CONCERTS OF PEOPLE WHOM WE KNOW INTIMATELY?
i PLEAD GUILTY BEFORE A TRIAL!!!
