Dear all,
We rasikas are all like gourmets coming out of a fine bhojanam dinner served by the masters dedicated to delighting us with wonderful fare. Surely, by the third sentence of expressing our gratitude, we use the word Sowkhyam, saukhyaM or even Soukhyam. They are all meaning that one ingredient equivalent to Palpayasam in the menu.
Someone VERY KINDLY asked me yo listen to this brilliant concert of
Amritha Murali at MA 2013. It is a fare full of saukhyaM. I feel compelled to share it.
Enjoy!

Thanks
This is indeed the definition of the undefinable "Sowkhyam".
A poor trranslation will be "comfort" (of both the performer as well of the audienece) !

I did listen to her at a different venue during season. I will write about it soon.
Yes. Soukyam is what it is. Incidentally I thought that you will be hanged if you record a concert at MA ! How manage?

Re: What is saukhyaM? Listen to Amritha Murali
Without meaning to draw attention from the music of Amruth Murali , which I will listen to now ....
Malamagalu used to be an iconic play of Yoganarasimha in my younger days . Story of an old man trying to win the heart of - and marry - a young girl.
The drama ran in tent theatres for months and we watched the drama many times over .
One of the punch lines that would have the audience in splits was the old mans reply to girls query ( your face has so many wrinkles ... sukku in kannada )
And the old man would reply - Sukkalle adu , sukhaddu
An earthy take on a famous quote : Wrinkles are where , once smiles have been .
Coming to Soukyam I a reminded of my Late Fathers last few hours on planet earth . He had many favourites in his lifetime , but as the end drew near , TNK AND KVN meant a lot to him in the soukhyam context .Skill , virtuosity , intelligence , fame (of the artist ) meant little to him at this stage . But these two greats - he would get moist in his eyes .That was some kind of soukhyam we all experienced . A comforting knowledge of the unknowable

Just cannot get over that dwirAga pallavi. Very well done.
Looks like a composition of violinist RK Shriram Kumar. Very nicely rendered!
Beautifully combining the 22nd mELakarta ragas in both the asampoorNa (shrI) and sampoorNa (kharaharapriya) mELa thereby rendering tribute to both Muttuswami Dikshitar and Thyagaraja in an indirect manner! [Or Venkatamakhin and Ramaaamatya too!]
यः खरं हतवान् सः खरहरः | खरहरस्य प्रिया खरहरप्रिया |
yah kharam hatavaan sah kharaharah (one who killed demon Khara is Kharahara)
yaa kharaharasya priyaa saa kharaharapriyaa (one who is beloved to Lord Rama)
'kharaharapriyAm' - one who is close to the slayer of the demon khara - Sita!
Beautiful play on the rAgamudra.

Sreebeecane,
I thought on similar lines. In fact I didn't know what was coming, so half way through the aalaapanaa when she changed the raga, I was perplexed. Weren't the two ragas from the same set!?
It was no doubt a bold attempt at combining Shree and KHP;
and the sahitya was clever.
(but I mused, alas, Rama's and Sita's separation and troubles all began with Khara's slaying in Dandakaranya!)
I would in general aver that ragas combined in an RTP should enjoy a degree of separation and provide contrast, like the Cedars of Lebanon. But the lady wanted to show how she will negotiate the two scales so close but playing out differently.
Good concert!
