Re: SYMPOSIUM ON LALGUDI JAYARAMAN AT CLEVELAND ARADHANA
Dear VKV: As things stand now, barring any unforeseen circumstances I would very much like to participate--however I am not sure I am qualified to comment on the Music of LGJ. I would like to throw some light on some of the facets of his personality that I have admired most during my over three decades of association with him. That he was truly a Compleat Musician in every sense of the word is indisputable.
In any case please let me know the formal agenda and what topics would be appropriate.
Some off-the-cuff thoughts:
LGJ's approach towards tradition and Innovation and how he has reconciled the two seemingly contradictory positions--some examples(here there would be lots of subjectivity as one person's idea of innovation might seem "pedestrian" and hackneyed compared to another!!) from the panelists would be illuminating.
LGJ's stress on accompaniments--especially Violinists' need to know the Sahityam well enough to bring out the Bhavam in the composition-- Personally I have admired how he brought the same sense of rigor and fidelity to others' compositions as he did to his own--example--his handling of the trinity's compositions and Sivan's/Bharathiyar's compositions.
LGJ's solo concerts--the structure and the variety--the "planning" for the concert and the selection of songs--be it Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center or a "small-town-concert" --involved the same level of care and circumspection.
LGJ's respect for the audience as well as the Institutions(no matter how he may have been treated by them)--genuine and his wish to present the best permeated his attitude throughout his life.
LGJ's deep understanding of the World(beyond the artistic boundaries) and his love of nature and unshakable faith in the Divine and how these were reflected in his compositions. This quality helped him in ignoring the "hurts" and "inequities" that he faced in the matter of recognition/awards(some of these may be deemed controversial and perhaps should be avoided!!).
The objective of the discussions should be for the panelists to bring out the multiple facets of his life and as a beacon for aspiring young artistes.
I am open to suggestions from other forumites.

VKV Sir
FIVE FOR FIVE
1) You may quote Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao on Lalgudi Sir " Lalgudi Jayaraman is not only a Great Son of a Great Father, Lalgudi is also a Great Father of a Great Son "
2) Setting example by total commitment and dedication to the deep classicism, not resorting to technical wizardry and gimmicks exhibitionism, possibility of achieving popularity and support of rasikas.
3) Teacher par excellence.
4) Composer with rare insights of sangita, laya kalapramana and lyric balance in his compositions.
5) Uncommon quality of impresario in Karnatic Music.

MKR Sir
You said "the two seemingly contradictory positions" on tradition and innovation. Lack of clarity and understanding on this vital aspect of classical music is not with Great Maestros like Lalgudi Sir. Tradition is a celebration of excellence in classicism, all the innovations with time tested qualities of excellence also becoming the tradition similar to a river and rivulets in union with another river or ocean. It is not Lalgudi's unique contribution but a quality leading to the acceptance of greatness in him.

Dear Sri VKV,
The encouragement given by Sri Lalgudi to several young and upcoming musicians - one leading example is that of Sri TN Seshagopalan,Dr.N Ramani. He went out of the way in building recognition in chennai to several artists from outside the state. Some of these are highlighted in Lakshmi Devnath's book - the Incurable Romantic.I feel one of the most unfortunate happenings is his not getitng the coveted Sangeethakalanidhi title.I understand it was offered to him several times by Music Academy, but Sir refused perhaps due to delayed recognition. It is simply a matter of history now.
