Few interesting points
The concert started exactly at 18 45 hrs. TMK was present at 18 20 hrs and other artistes were at 18 35 hrs. He took 10 mts for sruti [Tambura] alignment

His first piece was at 18 55 hrs. President of PSS arrived at 19 10 during Thodi and the committee members started greeting him. Immediately he became silent. TMK wanted to know from the rasikas whether he can announce the name of the raga before each piece. During the concert he mentioned that this is not a concert only he is singing and wanted rasikas to enjoy music. He asked the organizers upto what time he can sing. On a particular request from one of the rasikas for an Abhang he told that he is yet to learn fully CM and no time for HM. On a request to sing Chinnanj chiru kiliye he told that his will be with a different patantharam. At the end he introduced his accompanying artistes individually.

Violinst is from Bangalore and a disciple of VVS
Mirudangam is the grand son of Upendran and presently a disciple of Guruvayur Durai
Kanjira is also from Bangalore. He had his initial training from Shri Veerabadrayya and later sishya of TKM.

The concert was excellent and Violinst Thodi and Behag were very pleasing.
Thani was good and quite enjoyable.
The concert was upto 21 25 hrs and the Hall was full till the end.

This kind of behaviour in seniors, who should be setting a good example, is deplorable --- but I am surprised that they dared to do it with TMK singing!

Yes you are right. R T was followed by these two kritis.
I too feel the same difficulty to travel from deep North Madras to South viz Mylapore, T Ngr for listening concerts that too in the evening hours.

'E' in tamil is quite a thing isn't it? One letter word!

BTW, I looked through artists abbreviated names to see if they form words like BUG. I found only 'PU' and 'ME'. The first one is to test Nick's tamil vocabulary ;)

Thank you Thanjavooran for your diligent reviews. Very happy to know that Peramboor Sangeetha Sabha is conducting such a grand music festival. The Grand Old Sabha was not in great shape during the last few years. It should regain its lost glory.

Gayathri Girish concert must have been excellent seeing from the song list. The Jaganmohini song is new to me. The venue being Sankaralayam, she has presented the Sahana song by Periaswamy Thooran on Mahaperiyava. Very appropriate selection. This song had been sung by MS. The Ragamalika made popular by SKR is also a rare feature in live concerts. GG is conquering new heights in each concert.

Perambur is too far for me to go, and from Tamburam it is even further.

It is great that organisations exist to bring music to outlying areas, but even greater that they get support from people travelling long, long distances to attend the concerts. Respect to the real dedicated rasikas!

Isn't it?

Given that it originated in Maharashtra, one would guess that most of them have been tuned in Hindustani ragas. Having said that, the bhajanasampradayam people routinely sing Jayadeva's ashTapadi in the Carnatic way. And, the last time I checked, Jayadeva wasn't a South Indian.

IMO, TMK could have respectfully said 'Enakku teriyaadhu' instead of this smart alec quip. My two cents.

I am no fan of the abhangist or the abhang sisters, but I find people cheering against singing abhangs quite disrespectful towards the artform! My $0.02.

The concert came to an end at 21 10 hrs
In general the concert was well planned and executed. There was a perfect alignment of voice between sisters and very good co ordination during Niraval and swaram. Violin support was excellent. Thani was good. As usual Rasikas sat till the end encouraging the artistes especially during Thani. Sabha secretary at the end thanked the vidwans for their devoted and best performance. Normally he talks for a minute only. But today he took 2 mts. To my surprise he mentioned about Rasikas.org and the reviews about PSS there. I MO, this is the first time a Sabha secretary of an very old and reputed sabha [ Estd 1931] mentioned about our forum and its service. He thanked Thanjavooran for the reviews about the concerts staying anonymous..
A word to the secretary with my humble pranams
I thank "Perambur Sangeetha Sabha" for recognizing the valuable service provided by Rasikas.org and mentioning my reviews in their Vote of Thanks. Rasikas.org is a wonderful organization that provides a sounding board for countless rasikas like me. As for Thanjavooran, I prefer to remain anonymous because I feel music reviews are more objective when you leave out the personalities of the reviewer and the one being reviewed

In chennai I still doubt if 50% of key sabha secerataries are seeing this site . I am glad there is a mention in general from a chennai sabha, online presence is key. The Bangalore royal challengers have a huge online presence , chennai is lagging big time . Let chennai catch up.

I heard thru very old members that perambur sangeetha sabha has done yeomen service .In particular artists like supernova flute mali have been constantly encouraged by Perambur. Glad to hear that you are continuing . By the way where exactly is this place , know perambur busstand , perambur high road , peravallur etc , where is this place , directions will help? Can we park in some road nearby the car and get into the sabha , Perambur high road is impossible- just few pointers on parking will also help. One of the days will take the 29C the other way and reach the sabha to hear a concert .

1931 was the year when Lalgudi jayaraman was born so was perambur sabha wow...

Shri rajeshnat,
The violinist is Melakaveri K. Thyagarajan. Sorry for the error. As regards to the ragas of kritis Shanmugapriya and Udhaya ravichandirika only . The other ' Neethaa sulabangamu ' it sounded like malayamardham to me. Composers name I am little doubtful.
The concerts venue is 'Sankaralayam' in Meenakshi street closeby to Perambur station. Cars are parked in the less busy street only . One can take 29C and get down at Perambur station and sankaralayam is at a walkable distance. I recollect few of my old memories. In early 60s there used to be two concerts daily during Isai Festival and the venue was RBCC School. The unique feature in those days was that Rasikas used to sit on Jamakkalam very close to the musicians. Shri Sethuraman was the secretary and all vidwans were having high esteem for him.

Perambur Sangeetha Sabha
Chithirai Isai Vizha 25 04 2014

'Kalinga Narthanam' Sangeetha Upanyasam by
Needamangalam Selvi V. Alamelu and
Sollin Selvan Dr. V. Subbaraman MA., Ph.D

The programme started at 18 50 hrs. No mirudangam and violin. All songs of oothukadu
Venkata Kavi with quotations from Bhagavatham at appropriate places
Anandha Narthana ganapathim
Payan tharuma a swraksharam jathiswaram in Karaharapriya
Adaadhu asangathu vaa madhyamavathi
Madhananga Mohana sukumarane Kamaz
Muthu krishna venu amudham dehi [ slow tempo ] Chenchurutti

The programe divided into two. First portion the Krishna's childhood in Gokulam by V Subrmananiam followed by ' kalinga narthanam ' by V. Alamelu.
The Kamaz jathi was of non stop with 10 mts duration. There was an announcement not to leave during the 10 mts jathi since Lord Krishna is dancing on the head of kalinga furiously. In total the performance was excellent with quotations from puranas. All sat till the end and standing ovation of the Rasikas was the highlight. Two hours programme was very pleasant and enjoyable.

Thanjavooran,
Taking a peek at this thread. Good going! We seniors don't lose our enthusiasm for good music, do we?

So much is written about concerts in big sabhAs in newspapers and by rasikAs. High time concerts in smaller sabhAs are written about too. Rajesh always talks about how the outside of the hub places need to do well so that locals will have an easily accessible place to go to, to listen to music. How very true! The traffic problems needn't hound rasikAs this way.

By the by, you have braved the traffic and have attended this series of concerts. Bravo!

Bengaluru has traffic problems too. Yet, I think there are enough sabhAs scattered throughout the city which offer more music away from the major sabhas than in Chennai.

Sri P. Viswanthan Yuva veena
Tanjur Sri Kumar Mirudangam
Ernakulam Sri Ramakrishnan Ghatam dis of Sri Vilvadri Iyer

Siddivinayakam Shanukapriya N S
Entharo Sriragam
Bajana seya Dharmavati R N S
Kamakshi Swarajathi Byravi R
Mana vyala kinchara Nalinakanthi R S
Sankarabaranam R T Ethuta nilachitheganapancharaga malika N S T
Annapoorne Shyama
Enna thavam saidhanai
kavadi chinthu
Theeratha vilaiyattu pillai

The concert started at 18 50 hrs. The instrument is with frets and sounds like veena when played. As told by the Artiste this was developed at the request of the music director T R Pappa during 1987 and the size is bigger than viola. playing is very difficult. He has added a string for playing panchama sruti. Even heavy light will reduce the sruti. This was evident as he was frequently adujsting the sruti as there was video coverage with focus light. Some time the notes were flat. Shri Viswanathan explained that constant practice is required to present few kritis on stage. He stopped playing this instrument for 10 yrs as he could not continue due to excessive physical strain. The performance was good. The hall was half full and maintained till the end. Thani by Kumar and Ramakrishnan was excellent.

The violinist who accompanied Sri T N Seshagopalan was Shri S.D Shridhar who has accompanied Shri TNS on number of occasions since the 1980s. He is a senior disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Shri M Chandrasekaran.

The invitation has given the information wrongly and the sabha secretary himself didnt know it was S D Shridhar on the violin.

My father 'veeyens' was a great patron of Perambur Sangeeta Sabha. He used to go for concerts there when we were living in Ambattur. We were all very young then. After moving into the Railway quarters, we also used to attend concerts there in the late 60s.

Perambur Sangeetha Sabha
[Sangeetha] Upanyasam on 18 05 2014

Sundarakandam Upanyasam [only with sruti]
by a 10 yr old [going to 6th standard]
Master G. Parasuraman alias Manigandan

The programme mostly with St T's kritis , Rama nataka keerthanai and Thulasi Ramayanam
was excellent. The boy's rendering of Valmiki's verses was enjoyed by all. Sabha secretary while introduction mentioned that the boy has no formal training under any Guru and his only influence was the CD of Visaka Hari gifted to him by his aunt. His fluency in conducting the performance was excellent and the entire audience were spell bound till the end. The boy has a very good future. Secretary in his vote of thanks requested the parents not to exert pressure on the boy to push further.
A request to the Scretary: When a coffe can is arranged for the Artistes and VIPs, a watercan also be arranged for the benefit of Rasikas at least during summer.

Violinist who is an AIR Artiste is a disciple of Dwaram Sathyanarayana and his Lalitha and Kanthimathi were good. The Thani of Shivaram who is a disciple of Kumbakonam Rajappier and Dr TKMoorthy was excellent and as usual all the rasikas sat till the end. The venue of today's concert was at Annadhana samajam instead of Sankaralayam as it is engaged on account of Sankara Jayanthi.

Perambur Sangeetha Sabha
July concert on 19 07 2014

Ms M.P. Savitha &
Ms M.P. Akilandeswari Vocal [ students of 11th stand and B Com ]
Thirucherai Karthic Violin
Thirucherai Kaushik Mirudangam

Swami thayara Kedara Gowla
Palum theli thenum Hamsadwani Varnamuka
Anupama Guna Atana
Thyagarajaya Begada R N and S
Venkataramana Lathangi R N and S
Chandra sekhara saraswathi
Karthikeya Thodi R,N,S and T
Bajan
Thirupugazh

The 2 1/2 hrs concert by two sisters and two brothers was good. The vocalists are the disciples of Seetha narayanan. The violinst is a disciple of BN Kumar and Mirudangam's Guru is Mannarkudi Easwaran. Sisters got able support from Violinist. and his Begada was good. Thani for 7 mts was excellent and as usual not even a single rasika left in the middle. As our forum member Mirudangam put in, this time also the invitation was wrongly printed by interchanging the names of violinst and mridungam. Is it not mendatory for the orgnisers to provide drinking water facility for the benefit of rasikas as I could notice an old man struggling for a cup of water after taking the prasadam distributed at the end of the concert.

IIRC Vidushi seeta narayan residence is ayanvavaram or something so it is good to see her disciple performing in perambum-ayanavaram belt.
By any chance are karthic and kaushik brothers, not heard the violinist yet but kaushik is surely a upcoming star to watch. Now kaushik is learning from Mananargudi easwaran ,i think he also learnt from kalakkad srinivasan. Tx thanjavooran for your review.

The selection of song was excellent. There were lot of derailments right from varnam and percussionists set it on track. There was a thani for 3 mts at the end of mangalam which was pleasing.

Perambur Sangeetha Sabha
23 08 2014

S/Sri Rithvik Raja Vocal

Vijai Violin

Sumesh Naryanan Mirudangam

Nera nammi Kanada Varnam
Sukunamule Chakravakam R N S
Entharo Sriragam
Ma Janaki Kambodhi R N S and T
Sarasa samadhana Kapinarayani
RTP Poorvikalyani with raga malika Gana pancharathna and T
Paramanandha Govindha mukundha Pallavi Adhi
Kana vendamo Sriranajani
Thillana Kamaz

The two hour concert started at 18 45 hrs and well planned. He is a disciple of Sulochana pattabiraman initially and presently TMK is the Guru. His voice did not co operate in lower octave and not pleasing. Kamobodhi and sriranjani were good. As he does abhinayam [ MDR ?] frequently out of line of the mike and appeared feeble during dilneation and niraval. There was a change in the last minute in violin artiste and he is the disciple of Rajasekaran. M Rajeev was to accompany and due to unforeseebn cirucustances could not make it. Mirudhangam Sumesh is a disciple of Thiuvarur Bakthavatsalam. He aligned sruti after every piece. I have a doubt . Hall is not having AC will the sweaty palm and fingers change the sruti? Just curious. Thani was good and as usual audience sat for both Thani. This is a unique feature in PSS. My frequent appeal and request attract deaf ears as regards to provision drinking water facility.

The concert started at 19 10 after observing silence for 2 mts in honour of Mandolin Srinivas
Excellent selection of the songs . IMO clarity of lyirics is lacking. The begada kriti is exact replica of MD's Vallabanayagasaya . Poorvi kalyani was well handled by both. Mirudhangam thani was good.. As usual sundal prasadam distributed at the end.

Smt Radha Parthasarathy Vocal

Maragatha valli Kambodhi R N S T
Sri Venkatesa Girisam Suruti

Songs were selected carefully. Vocalist is a disciple of Rukmini Ramani and undergoing advanced training under PSN. Nasika bhooshani and Mohanam were very nice. Referring notebook for lyrics could have been avoided. Kambhodhi Niraval was good. The Violinist had his initial training from Kanyakumari and presently under the dutelage of Seetharama Sharma. Payyur Gopalakrishnan was trained by his father Vaitheswaran Kovil Vaidhyanatha Iyer and a practising Lawyer. The concert started at 19 00 hrs since the violinist came late. in general the performance of violinst and mirudhangam was good. At the end as usual prasadam.was distributed .

Thanjavooran, Thanks for giving the meticulous review of the festival organised by Perambur Sangeetha Sabha. The Asst Secretary of the Sabha is my friend and I am getting all the invitations. But because I am in the other part of the City, I am not able to attend. I am writing this with reference to the concert of Navaneetha Krishnan.
I know him very well. He has learned in Mumbai, then with Radha Viswanathan on his shifting the base to Chennai and presently under Padma Narayasanswamy and follows the KVN style. You may see that the concert list is exactly KVN concert list. Could you get the KVN style in his concert. I would like to know. Secondly, you have written that he lacks clarity of sahithyam. I cannot agree to that. Because I have heard him many times in private and his gurus give great emphasis on clarity of sahithyam. He is not a person who knows only Tamil. Because this problem arises mostly in the case of vidwans who know only Tamil. Can you tell me in which song you observed this defect.
Karunakara madhava- Begada. It is no way parady to Vallabhanayagasya. Karunakara - entire song is sung in Madhyamakalam.

Shri CRama Avl,
ThanQ very much for your clarification as regs to MD's Begada kriti. While honouring your comments on Navaneetha Krishnan's capabability no doubt he is a versatile Vidwan, but as I could not make out the opening lines of each kriti may be due to my poor hearing capacity or noisy speaker. Hence I carefully used the word ' IMO ' Really happy that you go thruough each review deeply and enjoy. Yes definitely I could notice KVN's influence during nerval delineation of Raga. A request to you. Please attend a concert at least in PSS though it is in North Chennai, as I do not fail to attend [ with my poor eye sight ] important musical events in and around Mylapore.
With wishes,

Navarathri Isai vizha 2014
Sathguru Thyagaraja Keerthanas
21 09 2014 Sunday

Shri Mahadevan Sankaranarayanan Vocal S/o TVS
Shri Anantha Padmanabhan Violin Dis of Kanyakumari and presently Shri Dakshinamoorthy
Shri Palakad Harinarayanan Mirudhangam Dis of MLN Raju and presently under PS Palgun

Sri Mahaganapathim Sourashtram S
Rama Bakthi Sudda bangala S
Samaja vara gamana Hindolam R N S @ Yadhava kula murali
Sambo Mahadeva Panthuvarali R N only @ Paramadhaya
Rama neeyeda Karaharapriya R N and S @ Gana soukya sukhama
Thalli Thantrulu Balahamsa
Vinayakuni Madhyamavathi
Mangalam

Excellent selection of songs. A very good patantharam. Most of the kritis he started from the second line. He was ably supported by the violinist. Vilonist Hindolam and Panthuvarali were excellent. Mirudhangam right from the beginning closely followed the vocalist and his thani was superb. Initially for a minute he played valamthalai only. There was a very good appreciation from all the Rasikas. He has very bright future. The one hour firty minitues concert in gereal was very nice.
Since the vocalist was to catch a train he was time conscious through out. At the end sundal prasadam was distributed.

I was reading the book "Great Musicians" by Prof. Sambamoorthy. This book contains brief accounts of fifteen of the luminaries who dominated Carnatic music scene during the post-Thyagaraja period. It is a fascinating book and Prof. Sambamoorthy reaches out to his past in gathering anecdotes and materials about musicians and gets tantalizingly close to Thyagaraja's period. There is a line there that got me intrigued. He writes in the Preface "My thanks are also due to .... Perambur Sangita sabha for allowing me to make blocks of valuable photographs in their possession."

He does not say which photographs but there are quite a few grainy ones in the book including a group photo of Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer, Patnam Subramanya Iyer and a few others taken in Pudukottai, in addition to photographs of many of the musicians he covers in his book.

It is entirely possible that PSS still has those and many other photographs. Before they all become victims to ravages of time ( if they have not already which is an unfortunate possibility ), we can work with them to restore and preserve them, in case they need help in that endeavor. At the minimum, it will be interesting to know what photographs they have and whether they will allow photos of the photos to be taken. It does not hurt to ask, hence asking.
