The concert started at 2:15 p.m. After the varNam, Surya gave a brisk presentation of Orajuppudu (my request) followed by MMI-ish swara flashes (12') that reminded me of my first exposure to the same by MMI in early 1951.
Next came bEgada AlapanA for 8+4 minutes. He explained the contributions of erstwhile Mysore Royal AsthAna vidvAns and presented a composition in bEgada by veeNa kuppier. Next was Sivan's appan avatharitha kathAmrutham with neraval at "thrilOka mangaLakara moorthy". While the presentation was quite good, personally I was somewhat disappointed that there was no AlApana for karaharapiya, my personal favorite rAga.
Items 5,6 & 7 followed before he took up the piece de resistance in kAmbhOdhi. After 17+10 minutes of AlApana, he asked the listeners to guess his next Tamil song ! GKB's thiruvadi charaNam was presented in all its glory followed by 12 minutes of neraval at "aduthu vanda ennai" and 12 more minutes of swara remeniscent of MMI and TVS.
Eleven minutes of Thani by Vijay Ganesh was remarkable in its brevity and punch!
It was 4:50 p.m. and I was feeling sorry that the concert would end soon after a few thukkadAs. To our pleasant surprise, Surya took up another AlApana. I had a little difficulty in identifying the rAga for a few minutes. An RTP in HamsAnandhi followed. The pallavi was new (to me at least): "swara laya rAga bhAva sangamam dakshiNa uttara sangeetha sAram" The swaras were in kamAs, darbAri kAnada, darbAr and chandrakaus, alternating south and north rAgas as explained by Surya.
After thukkadAs, items 10 to 13, he said that he would conclude the concert with a thillAna , but some one in the audience asked for the "English Note". Surya obliged with the "note" instead of the thillAna followd by mangaLam and the concert came to an end at 6:05 p.m., after almost 4 long blissful hours.
This is the first time I hear the accompanists in person and both H.N. Bhaskar and Vijay Ganeh provided excellent support elevating the concert to a superb level.
The concert was well worth my long drive to Tampa.

ON SURYA PRAKASH:
I have hesitated to write about S because of my enormous personal liking as well admiration for his PROFESSIONAL ABILITIES ARE BOTH SUPERB & unmatched........
Suryaprakash has inherited the BEST from his Guru (T.V.S.- Who can forget his musical debut which started in N.A. with 45 concerts in 26 days in '75 with each concert at least 3.5 hours & many more than 4 hours!) & the TRUE UNDERSTANDING of the Paramaguru M.M.I.'S MUSIC. I am making the claim having listened to at least 500 of m.m.i.'s concerts.
In keeping with MMI HE has put his EXCELLENT voice to good use & has followed MMI'S penchent for following the great musicians of twentieth century & incorporating the BEST in their music in his concerts with his own twists. Starting with the real golden oldies of Sivan's immortal compositions made ETERNAL by M.S.S. TO the GREAT VOCALISTS OF C.M. OF THE GOLDEN AGE SURYA PRAKASH IS A REAL REVELATION. He brings to LIFE those GREATS in his concerts today. His TECHNICAL ABILITIES & UNDERSTANDING ARE SO GOOD he is able to do this. Anyone who is familiar with those great musicians
will easily recognise the truth in what I AM WRITING HERE.
I am still surprised & shocked that his GENIUS is still not recognised & rewarded PROPERLY. I hope & pray he will get his proper due. VKV :ymapplause:

Sundara Rajan,
Thank you for the review. Even duration of each item is registered by you...Rajesh's delight, and doubly so--a four hour concert too!
One hour of kAmbOdi and a nice mix of rAgAs and songs. He seems to have delighted his audience in Miami too, with another substantial concert on sunday.
VKV,
Yes, it has been like 'when there's a good thing with all the necessary elements, just take it for granted!' in Surya's case. His musical abilities, fluency and a beautiful voice are obscured by another aspect of his music for some rasikAs--they only zero in on that one aspect--ranjakam (appeal)
In my view, with all the above, to boot--his music is getting better and better...
