Re: The Evolution of a Tillana
Talking about thillanas, today I accidentally started listening to Smt. Madhuri's Hindustani vocal in DD. The raag was Bairagi. When I listened it was almost same as the carnatic Revathi. The presentation was just brilliant. A particualr portion reminded me of some thillana in Revathi sung with a deep sad bhaavam. Initially could not place what it was.
After meditating for a while, I remembered the peak words " Velane - ennai eno maranthai" . Googled for some time. It was, of course lalgudi's thillana. I heard the presentation in youtube of artists called Toronto brothers. Not satisfied. Then I remmebered that it was Saketharaman who gave the unforgettable feel which has stuck in my mind even after so many years. I will try to see if I can get a recording somewhere. If anyone has it you can give a link. If you happen to go to saketharaman's concert remember to ask for the song. Simply divine. That is a thillana. In the search I also heard Maharajapuram Santhanam's Sivaranjani thillana. Superb. What depth and feeling.
One of these days I will sit and listen to all the links given by sweetsong of Sri.Rama Varma and Dr.BMK.

That revati ragam thillana was popularised by MLV and then by Sudha Raghunathan. IIRC, this is available one of MLV's commercial releases.
