Al luck would have it I have lost the list I wrote. So this is purely from memory. It was a cold winter night in Auckland and the lights were dim and it was a slightly delayed start. So, guess what, that serene Nilambari was perfect for me at least. Bhoopathy Sir started at the exact point when Krishna did with a deep thwack and it was all in place. The Sriranjani Ragam meandered along unknown paths and was quite brisk :) Bhoopathy didn't blink when he was asked to play a thani and played a brief one. One of our young students said to me later, Vandanamu is a simple song but there was so much more there when TMK sang it.

TMK then turned to Sampath and said play what you like. He was plain stunned. TMK said yes, you can choose any raga. Sampath then quietly smiled and played an amazing Varali which was apt at so many levels at that point in the concert. I think Varali is one of TMK's favourite ragas as well and as the first prathi madhyamam raga, it changed the mood perceptibly. If the Ragam was splendid, Thanam at Shadjam and below all in Mandaram was almost religious! It was time to shut the eyes and smell the mountain air.

We were expecting a padam or javali when he sang a slow Behag. The Thillana there was surprising and the neraval even more so... but very well done. There was a clamour for a fast song-so a brisk Kamboji with Maa Janaki was so tongue in cheek, it had a few us laughing all the way. For me, the piece de resistance for 2014 will be that Manji. Needless to say it was slow, needless to say it was superb. It will stay with me for a very long time.

TMK's concert was partly sponsored by Sri Balaji Temple Trust (Hamilton). We are aiming for a kumbhabhishekam later in the year with the gorgeous idols already here. Still need huge donation to complete building work. Shri TV Shankaranaryanan is performing this evening. Will have to miss it since I'm back home. So hope someone will review it.

MV, thanks again for your report!

It feels like you take a standard songlist and then hit randomize on your favorite mp3 player and you get TMK's kutcheri :) That said, they are all such beautiful compositions that he does full justice to. Interestingly, TMK does an excellent rendition of LGJ's behag tillAna!

Trivandrum Sampath's star appears to be on the rise. Good on him! I heard him play with TVS here in SF recently.

MV,
Thanks for bringing us the atmosphere of your Kiwi land concert.
Cold and frosty evening and the religious tAnam...

Shuffle the cards KrishnA and deal,
Shuffle the songs and sing!

A song is a song as long as it remains as one--
As long as it is sung or played--why have both?

Shuffle the cards KrishnA and deal,
Shuffle the songs and sing!

Order not in order is in order--
Now that you have stuck to that

Shuffle the cards KrishnA and deal,
Shuffle the songs and sing!

Singer is rasikA too, so, 'let the violin sing!
I want to hear', he says, and the violin sings

Then at the end of the concert
When It's time to leave, he asks--
'May I come? varugalAmO?'

When he is leaving?
What an evening!
Are we going to the concert
Or coming from it?

But making music,
He makes rasikAs come
What if they start singing
When it's pause mode for him?

Shuffle the cards, Krishna, deal!
Who knows what you may come up with
The next time around! Hopes abound :)

Arasi, that is cool. Poet in English as well as Tamil.
But I remembered there was a PoorviKalyani Ragam and KS for Ninnu dhyana(sorry, don't remember the words now) on Ekambreshwarar and Kanchi Kamakshi in Misra Chapu. Again lovely raga by both TMK and Sampath and even better KS passages. But the composition itself was the star in that-looked like a Syama Shastri kriti but probably didn't sing the Mudra charanam. Bhoopathi played a super thani for M. Chapu

The Poorvikalyani was Ninnuvinaga Mari by SS. It has been sung by MDR, TNS and Chembai but it was the first time I heard it. Beautiful

Ninnuvinaaga mari - Poorvi Kalyani is one of TMK's favorites i think. I heard him sing this in NGS in 2012 Dec. Please check out his rendition of this song in Dec season 2006 (the link below is for this album in Rhapsody) -the song has been broken into 2 tracks, a total of 62 minutes, and it includes R, KS, N, thani. I have no words to describe how wonderful this rendition is, and the incredible performance by the accompanying artists as well. I feel like the song brings Kaanchi Ekamreshwarar sannidhi in front of my eyes
