Sometime in the nineties there was a festival in Bangalore Palace grounds. They featured one day MSS. Another day was Balamurali with Kishori Amonkar. It was highly enjoyable that Kishori was herself and Balamurali cooperated brilliantly. There was no rivalry.

I find most HM-CM affairs become too much laya or gimmick driven or a case of one upmanship. We get at best 50% of each artiste's best and together it's 25%

To judge a Jugalbandi concert quality, it is essential that performing artists are committed artists to give their best of the music system they are practicing, uncompromisingly. If not very good knowledge of the other system, artist should have good knowledge of the other system and its practice. The artists should have mutual respect for the expertise in music. Artists must make very sincere and serious effort to win the appreciation of rasikas for both the systems of classical music. After a composition from each of the artists strictly conforming to their system of music, artists should select one composition in which there are common features which is in their respective music systems. In this composition performance, artists must collaborate to accommodate each other for the improvisational aspects in both the systems. In the final composition of the performance, artists must select a composition and each perform strictly as per their system, clearly establishing the unity in diversity.
The percussion support also must follow as per their systems first; collaborate with the other, retaining the core elements of their system; support the performance of the artist of the other system, independently each for a composition, conforming to their system; the laya vinyasam must have first part conforming to their systems and the second part respectfully following the other system; final part should be based on the common feature in both the system for the ending.
I had observed, in the very limited jugalbandi concerts, compromise and one artist, is less in accommodating the other artist. For e.g. Carnatic Musician trying perform as per the other system, not highlighting the unique quality of the system they belong to; Hindustani Tabla percussionist trying to follow the Mridangam artist of Carnatic Music.
Now judge and give your choice and suggestion for my listening pleasure.
