This concert was part of the Tyagarajotsavam held at Lewisham Temple (London) on March 17-18th.
Smt Rajeswari Satish gave an excellent performance. She is blessed with a voice that has lots of soukhyam, plus her vidwat is top-class.
She started the concert with a great rendition of Lalgudi's Charukesi varnam, followed by a mellifluous Sriranjani. The Durbar song provided a pleasant change in pace. The sub-main item followed: a brilliant Purvikalyani. Her alapanam brought out the beauty of the ragam so well. Smt Jyotsna came back with a lovely reply in her playing of the alapana.
The Kalyanavasantam was so pleasant to listen to. An old rendition by Lalgudi is my favorite, and she did full justice to this kriti with her soukhyam-laden voice.
Next came the the main piece, a top-class Kambodhi. Neraval was done at bhakta parAdhInuDanucu parama bhAgavatula, followed by swaras. She delineated the raga bhavam so well.
The Desh kriti is a favorite of mine, and she sang it so well. This was followed by a tillana of Veena Seshanna.
(Btw, she told me later that the tillana has the name of [Maharaja] Krishna Rajendra in it, who himself was a composer, but considering that Veene Seshanna was under his patronage in Mysore, he could have put the name in it. Can someone confirm this point please?)
The evening's programs continued on with a concert by Carnatica brothers, so no mangalam was sung by Smt Rajeswari.
Smt Jyotsna and Sri Pratap gave excellent support. Overall a very satisfying concert experience.
Btw, Smt Rajeswari is moving back to the US (New York) soon, so you lucky people in America will get lots of opportunities to listen to her. Don't miss her kutcheris, she is excellent!
