Sanjay Subrahmanyan at Trivandrum

Post by sanjaysubfan »

Found this review by Ramakrishnan Harihara Iyer on Sanjay's Facebook Page

A superb Sunday!!! Woke up late in the morning after hectic short journeys in the previous week....catching early morning trains and coming back late in the night by whatever mode of transport available....Spent quality time with my mother, wife, sons Govind and Aravind....

Had a late Sunday sumptuous lunch: Pitla, Olan, Vazhakkai-Chakka kottai mezhukkupuratti, finely chopped carrot, cucumber, green chilly salad topped up with green coriander leaves, nanchil nadu rasam, kovakkai vattal ( a new addition in our kitchen which I find interesting), arisi vattal, curd!!! But the icing on the cake was home made Avakkai urukai sent by my younger sister from Bangalore, Lakshmi Mahadevan with a liberal sprinkling of love and affection!!! The desert was home made kadalai muttai!!!!!! This is what is called complete, satisfying meals!!

The evening was divine as I was fortunate to attend the Cutchery of Sanjay Subrahmanyan at Neelakanta Sivan Sabha....I am no body to comment on an ace musician who has already reached the status of Semmangudi, MDR etc., But one thing I found amazing and highly appreciable is that still he does his home work, works hard, always looks at opportunity for improvisation and has got lot of respect for his rasikas!!! The audience one and all were enthralled by his powerful, energetic, full of life and magnetic voice!!! A great unforgettable feast for the ears!!!

As a homage to Saint Composer Neelakanta Sivan, he sang his composition: ‘Nava Siddhi Petralum' in Kharaharapriya which was charged with devotional fervour. Kharaharapriya was one of the favourite ragas of Semmangudi!!The crescendo he brought out to this krithi was indeed superb!!! This song has always been very dear to my heart since the time my grand mother used to sing during my childhood as it is full of meaning and explains in simple term ethics and code of conduct in human life!!!

A trivia: Sanjay is a Chartered Accountant and rank holder in Cost Accountancy....I am sure this background would have enabled him to become better than the best in his chosen field!!
I would recommend my FB friends to spare a few minutes to go through the lyrics.....

.....which was charged with devotional fervour

I do not disagree on the effect, yet from my attending various SS concerts it can be said that
he does justice to the composers dhattus and matthu (esp Tamil) with verve. If this is done the
sublime bhakthi will flow. MS did not do otherwise. However it needs to added that many keep stressing on the
mathu bereft of theevra swras or higher order raga lakshana loaded sangathis.

The song list could have been provided along with the list of eateries.

Ah, nothing like home cooking! Had a generous whiff of a kerala cuisine--every dish a classic.

Nava siddhi peTRAlum can stand on its own, like a main dish in a concert. A superb composition and that kharaharapriyA would have been given a royal treatment by Sanjay (have heard more than one of his mains in the rAgA). What were the items around it?

SS Fan,
Wonder if the face book fan looks at Rasikas.org posts...

Nothing like savoring a song list. It's next only to listening to a concert live :)

Copy pasting review of Sanjay's concert on Aug 7th from Hindu Friday Review, Thiruvananthapuram

Sanjay Subrahmanyan

Sanjay Subrahmanyan began with a varnam ‘Maaghuvaa’ in Narayanagaula. Swati Tirunal’s ‘Deva Palaya murare’ in Asaveri, one of the kshetra kritis in praise of Lord Krishna of Ambalappuzha, was the next number. The sweet classicism and the strength of gandhara and dhaivatha in Mohanam were demonstrated through an enchanting rendition of ‘Srirama ramaneeya manohara’, composed by Pallavi Gopala Iyer.

In an elaborate Thodi, Sanjay drew sustenance from depths of virtuosity and followed it up with the kriti ‘Ennerumum oru kalai thookki’, composed by Marimuthu Pillai, Adi tala.

In the post-tani session a ragam thanam pallavi in Arabhi with ragamalika thanam blended with enchanting ragas such as Subhaantuvarali, Kedaram, Saveri and Sahana was well received by the audience. Sanjay suddenly switched over to Kharaharapriya and landed in ‘Navasiddi Petralum’, a Neelakanta Sivan kriti. He wound up the concert with two small pieces in Ananda Bhairavi and Kapi.

M.A. Sundareswaran (violin), Patri Sathishkumar (mridangam) and B. Sundarkumar (ganjira) excelled.
