Will the coming december season be different?

Post by thaaye »

Just wondering if the coming December season has anything different to offer? Any child prodigy or ensemble debut or foreigners (actually after jon Higgins no foreigner really sang...I think), street performances, and of course, the menu :)

Also, anything unique about the festival... say, in terms of concerts, instruments, venues or artists, etc., or anything else too that stands out from other music festivals around the world?

That's what I thought too. Thing is my daughter has to write an essay for her college and she's planning to write on uniqueness of our music festival. Actually she's doing a liberal arts degree. and they don't want a general essay on the festival, more on the unique points and how is it different from other festivals or at least will the December season now be different, etc. So, now, I'm on the run trying to find 'unique' points if not different forthcoming season. Told her not to take such topics but these intellectual daughters are so adamant... :|

Lady, don't waste your time here. Ppl here will probably respond only if you 'express' your opinion. If you ask for input or suggestion or something constructive, they'll never have any.

My two cents: Old wine in new bottle. Whatever musical events had taken place, just repack them in interesting words that appeal to the teacher/lecturer. Like, don't say concerts. its boring to simply say concerts, say concerts in the soothing mist or with the backdrop of some gopuram, etc.

I am sure that for some people the coming december season will be the different (young upcoming artistes who get their first opportunity at a large stage etc.). May be you should contact some of them to get a different angle.

You could talk about the pros and cons of how December is such a big festival. It's an entire month long and within that month, thousands of concerts are being preformed by professionals who make their living through music as well as young students who are just beginning to learn the concert platform from 8 AM through 10 or 11 PM. While that is great for rasikas in that for that entire month, on any given day at any given time, you can attend the concert, as well as every single day you can listen to BIG artists, one could make the argument that there are too many choices. If at 7 PM, there is a TMK, Sanjay Subramanyam, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Pantula Rama AND Sudha Ragunathan concert, naturally crowds will divide and a smaller audience will be there. I've seen some very well known artists have as little as 10 to 20 people in the hall because it's simply impossible to be two places at once. For most (all?) other festivals, especially Western festival , it isn't organized in such a way and no where near as large.

You could also talk about the NRI influence, as well as what they are bringing along. While many are singing/playing traditional music, there seems to be more western fusion that I've noticed, such as jazz-carnatic fusion which I wouldn't think (though am not sure) was there 10 or 20 years ago.

mridangamkid, will you make this years's season by being here? It would be good to meet you. There may be a rasikas.org meet, and, even if not, members meet up anyway...

There are many unexplored ragas and unsung compositions....which require consideration in the ensuing season or reactivation..

One such is Raga Andhali:
The raga is almost extinct today in the popular concert platform. One hopes that Andhali would get performered with its elegant cittasvara as well in concerts…
There are only two compositions in this raga:
brhannAyaki--AndhALi—Adi By Muthuswamy Dikshadar
This is rendered by Smt T Brinda

brhannAyaki--AndhALi--Adi--Brinda-Mukta.

The other one is
abhimAnamu--AndAli--Triputa- by Thyagaraja
This was rendered by Dr. BMK

vINA bEri vENu vAdyAdi vinOdini - MD

I don't think there is any story in our mythology where Gods and demi-Gods ever sang vocal music. Of course nArada - the eternal traveler, went around the Universe propagating bhakti, playing on his mahati and 'nArAyaNa nAmamunu pArAyaNamonarincucu' - as tyAgarAja put it. Also, there were kimpurushas - and bANar in Tamil - who were professional musicians. Otherwise, It is always the instrumental music that is given great regard. But to-day, instrumental music - as solo - are becoming rare. Can we coax the people who matter to dedicate this music season to Veena?

Have heard Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath, one of the bright young singers of today present it at Sastry hall a few years ago.
