Saraswathi Vaggeyakara Trust is well known for its efforts in preserving and fostering traditional value based music.and in selecting artistes with this end in view. It was appropriate that Varalakshmi Anandkumar, a disciple of D K J , was chosen to present Dikshitar Krithis on 23rd March 2007 (Dikshitar Jayanthi).]
After a brisk start with with Gananayakam and Renuka Devi, Varalakshmi presented an amazingly beautiful, short and sweet Khamas as a preface to the endearing Krithi Sarasa Dala Nayana.
Sri Guruguha in Devakriya was briskly rendered before moving on to an elaborate Thodi , bringing out the traditional evocative facets of the raga. The choice of the weighty creation Sri Krishnam Bhaja Manasa was natural and appropriate.
Neraval at Sanka Chakra Dhara and swaras were rendered with great élan.
Somasundareswaram in Vasantha seemed to signal the conclusion but she went on to sing the Ghanta Nava avarana Sri Kamalambike reminding one of the great tradition to which she is heir.
The concert was a testimony to the fact that fidelity
to the padanthara and unswerving adherence to the classical values have a merit of their own in adding to the listening pleasure.
Padma Shankar, the accompanist non-pareil , added lustre to the concert with her sweet versions of Khamas, Todi and the engaging swara sallies. It is amazing how she intuitively adjusts herself to the ideas of the main artiste and goes on to embellish the concert within those parameters
.
