Re: Vijay Siva @ Raga Sudha Hall, 12/Sep/2014
I endorse fully sankark's comments/summary. Despite my Jet lag(just landed in Chennai 10 hours before) it was a musically uplifting expereince.Given my own bias towards the ARI Concert structure and reverence for trinity's compositions,Vijay scored heavily on my book. The Dinamani Vamsa was invigorating--Both Viji and Eswaran played superbly--the former admirably showed her accompaniment prowess(distinct from her solos/duets).I look forward to her accompanying role more in the future
The Thodi alapana and Datsu Kovalena were reminiscent of Alathur's rendering.
.
The vachaspati pallavi was crisply rendered with thebalanced laya vyavaharam(I am a novice at this part!! so bear with me if I I sound amateurish at this laya description!!) .
What came out distinctly was the sincerity and devotion Vijay Shiva brought to the whole concert--good balance, good kala pramanm appropriate to the piece.
I do not know how many other forumites were there besides Sankark(would have loved to meet him/her!!.
I question myself how often I wax eloquent about concert structure and nostalgia for the old(reptitious as it may seem) whetehr I have a hidden distaste for something new and unique.I am convinced I am not dismissive of the new and improved.Palghat Mani Iyer used to say in Tamil--crudely translated--if you keep repeating the old gems often enough they would acquire a New sheen and make it sound as if it is new, he went on to add I am not against learning new compositions or new composers!!
Vijay Shiva's concert reassured me that I do not have to dsicard my taste for the Old and tradition.
Altogether a nice enjoyable evening!!!

Pari Pahimam Para Vasudeva was one in Jagan Mohini.
A wholesome concert.Accompaniments elevated the level.
Audience respected the stern request of Nadapasana Srinivasan not to move during Tani avarthanam.
RTP in Vachaspathi -Swara returns by Lalgudi was really enjoyable.

Both the dasar padam & the immediately following virutham were in Yadukula kambodhi.
A wonderful concert & the somewhat inconsistent Vijayalakshmi was also in good form.

"Somewhat inconsistent Lalgudi Vijayalakhmi........."
A comment which is not correct on a performing artist upholding one of the best traditions of carnatic music.

Lakshman,
Believe you are referring to this http://www.medieval.org/music/world/car ... _para.html composition of MV. No "vara gana lOla" anywhere in that lyrics & the raga is Janaranjani whereas the song he sang seems to have been jaganmohini.

Re: Paripahimam--after the concert I asked Vijay Shiva--he confirmed that the composer is Vasudevacharyar and the Raga is Jaganmohini.

From the English translation provided , the virutham should be VaLLalr' following composition:
ஈ என்று நான் ஒருவர் இடம் நின்று கேளாத
இயல்பும் என்னிடம் ஒருவர்
ஈதிடு என்ற போதவர்க் கிலை என்று சொல்லாமல்
இடுகின்ற திறமும்இறையாம்-------
This virutham by Vijay Siva is one that I remember enjoying on several occasions.

Sundara Rajan,
What beautiful lines! So apt for singing as a virutham.
