The other side of the moon

Post by Rsachi »

This morning I had a glimpse of the other side of the moon.

Organised by the Bangalore Kidney Foundation, the Mallikarjun Mansur festival featured vocalist Kalapini Komkali, daughter of Pandit Kumar Gandharva.
A very interested audience at the well maintained JSS auditorium listened in rapt attention as Kalapini presented Bilaskhani Todi, Ahaliya Bilawal, Sur Malhar, Kafi and a couple of bhajans. She sings in her father's emphatic style with deep impact. The ragas assume a poignant and hard-to-ignore persona as the phrases sink in.

Once in a while, it's nice to see how the Hindustani world lives, akin to a glimpse of the other side of the moon.

Listening to Bilaskhani Todi, with its pathos associated with Tansen's bereavement which occasioned its unveiling, I remembered John Keats:
My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains/ My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk..

The last one is at a flower seller in Gandhi Bazaar, close to where I lived as a child. Try the special banana-leaf lunch nearby in Udupi Krishna Bhavan. It's the best in Bangalore.

Sachi,
Thanks for the posts appealing to all senses.
Talk about heritage...Yes, I have heard her name, but haven't heard her sing.

Since you covered other aspects of the concert and its environs, here's a fashion note. Northern musicians taking to kanjeevaram. Was it Parveen Sultana who started the trend?

Arasi,
Indian silks, from Benares to Bengal, from Odiya to Kancheepuram, from Mysore to Venkatagiri - everyone is an absolute world stunner... What can I say? Indian women have such wonderful choices...

Javanthi, Mullai, Lotus. Lotus must be more in demand during Saraswathi/Durga puja.

Thanks Sachi. I do not follow a lot of HM artists, but Kalapini Komkali is one of the few artists I would like to listen live. She got on my list after I listened to this one which I hear is her father's composition which he frequently performed.

Yes, VKM,
Her legacy from Kumar Gandharva is priceless.
Of course Kumar-ji was in a different league, he was an original, he was a mystic....

Varsha, I suspect, has a huge collection.
I have myself shared his music in the Sunday Brunch.

Spring cuckoo,
Thank you for this delightful piece! I quickly scrolled the comments bit. Yes, there were those who had heard the father and felt that his singing was something to hear--true, very true, but as if this isn't! Hope I can catch her live performance, with some luck. I have heard Gangubhai sing sohani and that was soul stirring in a different way. Goes to say, how something good gains a new svarUpa with every ace artiste rendering it.

She's lively, gives richly, with a smile in her face and heart, it seems :)

I am on her trail now...

I liked your title for the thread, Sachi. The two regions separated by a common music!!

I wanted to give the phenomenon a Sanskrit name. I made one up with the help of the dictionary: पारेचन्द्र ( pArEchandra ). I checked with my Sanskrit Pundit friend and he said 'Perfect'!

Whatever you prefer. My own feeling is that English often does the best job for many such ideas :)

I have been hearing Kalapini now for a few years and she always makes an impact... Hence the early morning trip from Indiranagar :)

Thalaivarda, good to hear about the evening!
There was once a DD broadcast of Dhrupad shared by rudra veena and voice.

I am secretly planning a vocal veena duet in the near future.

I didn't come because I wanted to hear a Shankarabharanam of Mandolin Shrinivas.. Wonderful long track with swara-raga-sudha....

Sachi,
Will make a good book title too. Should I say E-book title, to be current and all that?

By the way, two of our recent reviews feature the moon and the rain, and no names of the artistes. kAr (dark clouds) and the moon.

VK,
pArEchandra is a nice coinage.
