SRI SANJAY SUBRAHMANYAN AT NAVARATHIRI MANDAPAM
28th SEPTEMBER 2014, Navarathiri Mandapam
Vocal - Sri Sanjay Subrahmanyan
Violin - Sri S.Varadarajan
Mridhangam - Sri Harikumar
Ghatam - Dr. S.Karthick
SONG LIST
Pahitharukshu - Jaganmohini - Adi
Kalayami nanda - Kannada - chapu
Sarasa sama mridhu - Gowrimanohari - Adi
Sadhuthada - Vakulabharanam -Adi
Janani Maamava - Bhairavi - Misra Chapu
Pancha sayaka Janakan (Utsava Prabhandam) - Neelambari - Adi
Reenamadanutha- Behag - Adi
A rainy Sunday evening, most of us drenched already only to get drenched again by Sri Sanjay's Fire cracking concert.
He started with Pahi Tharakshu, with very attractive swaram patterns. A very sweet and melodious Kalayami in kannada was next with equally sweet, entertaining and melodious swaram patterns. A very nice and relaxed alapanai in Gowrimanohari was followed by not so often heard sarasa sama mridhu. Sadhuthada took off on a brisk note with equally stunning swarams too!
I have heard Sri Rama Varma sing this in a very sedative note bringing in the beautiful meaning of the song right before us and hearing Sanjay sing gave an altogether new dimension to the song.
Bhairavi being the main for that evening was presented with such an elaborate and Grand Alapanai. It was awesome, lasting more than 30mins between the vocal and violin. Varadarajan replied so beautifully. I felt that the alapanai was slightly longish but he won our hearts with his beautiful beautiful Thaanam bringing in so much variety into his presentation.
My most favourite moment of the evening, and heart paid koti namaskarams to Sanjay for gifting us with such a beautiful thaanam !
His neraval and kalpanaswaram was pretty short but was fitting to the song presented. After an excellent Thani by Harikumar and Karthick Sanjay sang Panchasayaka in Neelambari. Such a rare and beautiful song in Malayalam, it sounded so pleasing and soothing to the ear after the Grand Bhairavi. The last song was Reenamadanutha, in Behag.
It was a wonderful concert overall !

I was initially thinking you may have mistaken kalayami raghuramam in bEgaDa as kannada . But then googled to find there is also a kalayami nanda in kannada. Sanjay must have sung that. Just posting that to disambiguate the two close kalayami krithis. Tx rasikapriya2013.

I was in Trivandrum on Sep 28,2014 and was keen to attend Sanjay's concert at navaratri Mandapam. But it rained very heavily and was literally caught unawares.however managed to reach the venue, but to find that i was not in the right dress code.hence had to return disappointed. There was a huge rush for the dhoti and hence could not get one.

Thanks so much for that beautiful review! I was really hoping someone would post about this concert. Sanjay sir always seems to make an extra effort for the Mandapam every year. So many new songs that I have never heard him sing before. What a superb team with Varadarajan Sir, Harikumar Sir and the one and only Ghatam Karthick Sir.

The Vakulabaranam piece, if I'm not mistaken, is set to tune by Prince Rama Varma - if your cable provider gives "Radio Malayalam" one would able to hear 1 hour of the concert broadcast 9.30-10.30 PM and I think the same is repeated at 9 AM the foll day - unfortunately for us, the cable guy was able to set it right only from y/day - so we were able to hear Vid.TVG morning and Vid Amrutha Venkatesh's veena

The radio relay portions of Navarathri Mandapam concerts ( the main song only in most cases) are being deligently uploaded by TVG in Sangeethapriya. Thousand thanks to TVG for his service.

After reading your review, how come you found "manodharmam was pretty short"? Manodharmam aspects include raga-thana-niraval-svarakalpana.

Comparing the Alapanai, Kalpanaswaram+niraval was relatively short.munirao2001 wrote:Rasikapriya2013
