Vaaggeyakaara-Personality and Compositions

Post by munirao2001 »

I attended on 16th,November, 2014 the Award function and the concert of Sangita Surabhi Vid.R.Vedavalli. The report has been posted by badari in Kutcheri & Review thread. Originally RV was to present Lec-Demo on the topic 'Multifaceted Personality of Thyagaraja' but announced that she has changed and chosen to present instead a concert with the excellent accompaniments, Vid.Nalina Mohan-Violin;Vid. Anoor Anantakrishna Sharma-Mridangam;Vid.Sukanya Ramgopal-Ghatam, with Thyagaraja's compositions in the concert. This change with the assumption that the personality and compositions demand different discourse, triggered this topic for discussion.
Is the personality and the composition of a Vaggeyakaara are distinct and separate aspects? As we all know that Vaggeyakaara is part Kavi and part composer with Saahithya bhaavam and Raaga bhaavam to be the vastu/substance for the keertana composition. The internalized bhaavam, with skill and mastery finds externalization in the keertana composition. The internalization process, with one's own perception, can it be independent of the vaaggeyakara's personality? No. Yes, in his observation and external environment and its influences, remaining in externalized vision only and not becoming internalized vision. For e.g. Social situation and morality factors. Observer perceives the prevailing conditions and its effect on the social aspects of human life and affectations, different from his own situation and morality. Gets the urge to express his dismay and even fear, advises change for upliftment.
When the artist also gets the insights of the vaggeyakaara in his composition, through saadhana internalizes and develops the skill to get in to the bhaavam-both the saahithya and raaga bhaavam of the original creativity and recreates in his performance of the chosen composition. The excellence achieved ensures, ideal and perfect unity of the personality, keertana, composition of the vaggeyakaara and the artists performing.
Thus, the personality and the bhaavam in compositions are truly embedded and reflected, even in performing not only gets highlighted in the lecture-demonstration. Lecture-Demonstration certainly makes it explicitly clear the implicit abstraction of bhaavam.

Sri Rao,
Very lucid.
I also feel that the soul of the composer resides in his compositions. We can see how the trinity were "maha" atmas from the eternal appeal of their compositions.
I also feel Adi Shankara is without a parallel in the timeless spiritual impact his verses have on us. We also saw recently, thanks to the efforts of Vedantabharati, how musical they are!
