This is about the workshop at Pondicherry last weekend by Prince Rama Varma organised by Vipanchi Kalaiyalaya. The venue was a spacious and well laid out hall at Ananda Inn in the heart of the city.
The participants included a large number of youngsters and children.
The first song was a rare composition in Bhowli by Sri M D Ramanathan. Sir clearly explained the difference between Bhowli, Revagupti and Bhoopalam. The entire lesson is now on YouTube. Prince is really unique in the way he brings out less known songs and makes them available to all.
The class responded well and Prince expressed his pleasure to the organisers. A brother and sister duo who run the music school, the organisers had taken great pains to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Gestures like handing out jasmine strings to the ladies and keeping a stack of paper and pens for anyone who may have foregotten to bring them showed the extent of thought that had gone into the planning of the workshop
We next had a melodious and meditative session of swara exercises in yamunakalyani. The song was a Thulasi Das composition tuned by Latha Mangeshkars brother that goes Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhaja mana. The charanams had delightful embellishments that saved them from becoming monotonous. This was also a slow tempo song.
On day 2 Prince changed the mood completely by teaching the Brindavani thillana of Sri Balamuralikrishna and two energetic notuswarams of Muthuswamy Dikshitar- Shyamalay Meenakshi and Vande Meenakshitwaam.
Class was generously punctuated by Prince's special brand of humour that had everyone in smiles. When doing Brindavani swara exercises he exclaimed that brindavani also has two Ni-s (N1 and N2) just like us and pointed to his two knees! A girl who sang the entire thillana solo beautifully as soon as it was taught was asked "is your name Mohanambal?" (Referring to the classic Tamil movie titled Thillana Mohananbal-my personal all time favourite!)
As always Prince painstakingly corrected mistakes in those who sang solo gently coaxing them without making then feel bad-for example telling one child that at his age he could not get it either and telling another young man how to modulate his powerful voice to suit the mood of the song. There was one touching moment when a little girl sang the full notuswaram solo and Prince appreciated her by saying "You look like Goddess Meenakshi yourself".
