Post by HarishankarK »

Hi,
I need lyrics and meaning to subject composition of Sri Garbhapurivasar. Audio clip is available in sangeethapriya under Dr. R Ganesh' concert uploaded as of yesterday.
He's sung it so beautifully. Is the language Telugu or Kannada??

Smt. Savitri - thank you. I do think that here, 'tanaya' is used to mean scion or descendant, because ganESa is not himavAn's (girISa) son.

And, I think garbhapuri dAsa is the aMkita of the composer...

rshankar jI, thank you.

Yes, *tanaya* means:: belonging to one's own family,

race , offspring , child.

In Sri Purandara dasara devaranama, *gajavadana bEDuve*

the reference to ganeSha is *gowrI tanaya*.

The same reference is in the SrI Tyagaraja Swamy keertana,

*girirAja sutA tanaya*.

The ankita of the composer is *garBhapuri vAsa*.

Thank you Lakshman ji, aaaaabbbbb and all. I fell in love with this song the very first time i heard it. Usually behag is presented in a lighter way in compositions. But this one is really classical. Also Irakkam Varaamal is good.

tanaya can only mean son.

The words girisha and girIsha are epithets of the hill-dwelling shiva. [vide tyAgarAja's niravadhisukhada, wherein rAma is girisha-vinuta and Muttiah bhAgavatars song from the 108 set on mahAbalEswara - girIsham mahEsham]

Hence, girisha-tanaya is a suitable title for gaNEsha.

garbhapuri is the Sanskrit transcreation of karu-Ur.

Interestingly, in the commencement of the kṛṣṇalīlā taraṅgiṇī, nārāyaṇa tīrtha's opening ślōka on gaṇēśa, "himagiritanayāpatyaṁ" also ends with "girirājasutāsuta sūnuḥ".

keerthi is correct - they are a Quartet - Garbhapuri - refering to karuvūr - the late T. Viswanathan had compiled together their compositions with notation in a book under the title, "garbhapuri kīrtanaigaḷ." brōva samayamidē in gaurī manōhari is also a piece by one of the four.
