Getting the message in ahead of... Part II

Post by harimau »

The Times of India reports in today's edition that a CD of Arasi's compositions, sung by Brightness of the Sun (R Suraprakash) will be released on Jan 6. The news (to me at least) is carried in a report that is 3 columns wide and there is a photo of Mr Brightness himself holding a tambura and a nice write-up about the songs that celebrate the love of a man for a woman. Sadly, there is no photo of the Hero of the News, our own Arasi.

Let me re-iterate what I said earlier: Oh Raji Nee Naamam Amy Ruchi?

PS. I translated Suryaprakash's name because Arasi is a translation of Raji. :) Also because fellow forum-mite Nick may need such a translation, him being not fully schooled in the Tamil language yet.

Arasi, many congratulations!!!!!

Harimau, I am sure you can do a better translation than that - it needs to be a Tamil name if you go by Raji turning 'Arasi' - you may consider 'kadiroLi', 'pagalavan suDar', etc. :)

Rajee speaking. Note the spelling :)

I was going to mention my CDs (yes, there are two) at GBL's remembrance concerts, an appropriate moment, for more than one reason. The cat (one at least) is out of the bag now.

Chellappa and Sridhar,
I was going to wait a while and then post the invitations on the forum.

It's appropriate that pagalavan suDar's picture appears in the paper. An old composer's songs better be good--it's a better thing than one's visage being seen in print.

The Bengaluru edition doesn't carry it. Suryaprakash or one of you will make it available, I hope. Hope the writer got everything right :)

Harimau,
You are some cat!
Don't get the Part II... :-\

Correct spelling noted for future use. :( Checked the newspaper for spelling of your name. They have it the way you like. Also, it is 4 columns wide, not three as I wrote earlier.

Noticed that one of the ragas you have used is Bagesri; very appropriate for the theme of love and longing.

Some weeks earlier I had posted an item under the title Getting the Message in Ahead of Dad. Since this was along the lines of breaking the news on Rasikas.org, I called this Part II. :)

PS. Checked the paper carefully. It is 5 columns wide! Great going!!!

The translation was for the benefit of Nick.

I considered Dina Chudar but that sounded awfully like a name a Tamil newspaper would have. (We have a Malai Chudar).

Somebody gave me a book to read of the reminiscences of a pioneering Tamil family settled in Malaya. The writer called herself Jeera! (Rajee definitely and possibly Krishnan too).

Appropriately enough, the book was sweet and simple.

Arasi congratulations! What's so special about this particular CD? Well, if male composers of yore like KshEtrayyA, sArangapANi, and more recent ones like Dharmapuri Subburamaiyer, Ghanam Krishnayyar, Pattabhiramaiah etc. could compose innumerable padams and javaLis that portrayed love and betrayal from a female's point of view with impunity,it is time for the tables to be turned, and now, it's Arasi's turn to portray a man's love for a woman.
Best wishes for the release of the CD(s)!

Given the near total absence of padams and javaLis that male dancers can use, I really hope that particular CD is produced as a DVD, with male dancers like Prof. C. V. Chandrasekhar or the fabulous Parshwanath Upadhye or our own very talented dancer-members performing these padams - I think the DVD can be called 'When a man loves a woman'!

Thank you Ravi, Punarvasu and Mahavishnu for your kind words (have to admit, a few of my friends did know of this project earlier and were a source of encouragement :) ).

Pattamma,
Thanks for the link. As expected with any press report, there are a few 'what's that's. Still, a well written piece.

I gain more status by getting to be a 'musician' with no effort on my part! And get a tad younger :)

The whole idea came about because of Arunk, who wondered about this obvious lack of CM songs coming from a man's heart--in the Technical Section of Rasikas.org. That was more than a year ago (not six months). Arun also wrote a song to point out the lapse! Thanks to him, I started getting the songs from then on.
I am so happy that Suryaprakash is singing these songs. I have been quoted, even from what I wrote on the sleeve of the CD cover...What more can I say?

Yes, the CD comes out on the 6th of January, but equally exciting is the fact that on the 8th of January, another favorite singer and friend, noted singer Gayathri Girish is going to give a concert after 'her' CD release! PATTU DIPAMAI OLIRUDE! is the title of the CD. Gayathri has chosen songs from my compositions old and new.

It has been a pleasure working with both of them--each giving their special stamp to my songs, just as Neela Ramgopal and Sumitra Nitin have, in their singing of my songs in the previous CDs... :-BD

Arasi Madam nice to know that Smt. Gayathri Girish is the other singer. I was fortunate to listen to one of your compositions being rendered by GG last season. GG and Rajee. Nice. Looking forward to the CD.

arasi madam,
Age defying creativity! I hope to hear them soon.
Sri Shatavadhani Dr.Ganesh, a great scholar, a great poet, musician and a teacher, all par excellence, has written and composed songs on the 'Nayaka Bhavam' and they were presented by three eminent artists-dance in Bengaluru. 'Kalasinchana' of Ananya, Dec'14 issue reported on this.

Munirao,
Thank you for the good wishes.Great to hear about Dr. Ganesh's compositions. A scholar, musician and a teacher too! Hope more and more compositions come about in the future.

As Ponbhairavi says, they have to be picked up by artistes to give voice and expression in dance to them...

I was saving the sharing of the two CDs news until GBL's remembrance concerts when both the main artistes sing, and were his favorites too! What do you know! Rasikas.org is getting to be as up to date (to the minute?) as the newspapers are.
Thanks to its energetic members.

I miss CML, who is taking a hiatus at the moment. A special friend who has encouraged me no end in my creative efforts. If my attempts bear fruit, Rasikas.org is largely responsible for that. Those who casually look in may not understand it, but there is a bond among us members, however much we may differ in our personalities and viewpoints...

Thanks!

The proof of the pudding is yet to come!

Also, the focus should be on Gayathri Girish and Suryaprakash who have sung the songs...

Translations are appreciated!

Even though I have become a Radhika with tablet on lap, doing such terrible things as checking the locality of the next concert, and the quickest route on foot (by walk, as they say), I have almost no time for forums until January, so audiophile cables, bad driving by bikers, and the state of the RTP will have to wait, while I hunt the beat itself. Must go to sleep t right now, to be at the academy by 9, in case Suguna sings another one!

Arasi, looking forward to your releases... I seem to recall that there are several in the RS Hall schedule. Or have I let several more cats out of the been bad? Time to throw a spanner! Anyway, see you there

Nick,
The words are all translations for Suryaprakash's name in the two old languages of India.

The big cat let it out of the bag, the Times of India being one of the dailies he reads.

No, there aren't any more in the bag.

I look forward to seeing you in your usual spot in RS hall. You have been there for two of my other CDs. If the nursery sounds don't occupy S, would like to see her too.

Will see you well before that, of course...

Thanks, VKailasam! Hope you can make it to the 6th and 8th for the concerts of Suryaprakash and Gayathri Girish :)

The time is 6 pm, I thought...?

Mannargudi Easwaran (our distinguished Rasikas.org member) has played for Volume: 4, and another forumite, Mannarkoil Balaji is playing on the 6th. Venkatramani on the khanjira.

MAE and Gopalakrishnan (another Rasikas.Org member?) have played for the CD. H.N. Bhaskar's violin in both...

Though late, please accept my congratulations and best wishes Arasi. What a desirable combination, Arasi and Surya Prakash ! I am sure this CD and the other one with Gayatri Girish will be well received. I have been away from home and the web on health grounds and had to miss all the gala in Madras, including your CD releases. I remember being present on two of your earlier releases.

idu hAsyam-nA! This is lasagna!

RasikAs should choose one of the names and honor fellow-member with the name as a title for him, don't you think? I heard him in concert again at MFA. Another winner of a concert but not a non-nirvana one. Haven't seen any fellow rasikAs today...
