A musician (the pronoun 'he' will be used throughout but in the sense that it may mean 'he' or 'she') was given a prestigious title by an old established sabha during its Season Inauguration.

In hs acceptance speech, the musician sad that the last time he performed at that sabha was 18 years ago. He then wondered how sabhas choose musicians to be honoured with titles and cash awards.

He listed the possibilities as the following:

Sabha secretaries get together and choose artists to be honoured by the various organisations in Chennai.

Sabha secretaries consult artists who recommend names of fellow artists to be honoured.

Artists form committees and then contact the sabha secretaries with their recommendations (meaning, these recommendations were not solicited by organisations).

Sabha secretaries don the mantle of artists and select artists to be honoured.

The awardee went on to say he did not know how the system works. However, he was told by his parents as well as his gurus that his music will not and should not change just because he received one or more titles.

He concluded by saying that he will not use the title he just received in front of his name in any context whatsoever.

even a higher intellect like yours will find it difficult to explain why I (I am using this pronoun to mean either he or she) would take the trouble to go and accept an award or title from a Sabha during their inaug. and then during the acceptance speech harangue on the possible permutations of the selection process and finally grandly denounce the award virtually by saying that I will never affix the title in front of my name. OK one data point is that I haven't performed in that sabha for the past 18 years. So what? So?
Explain this to me, my friend!

You need to ask the awardee that question!

Some folks felt that the organisers deserved that jibe about ignoring the artist for 18 years only to suddenly decide to honour him this Season.

The artist did perform for the sabha this Season!

Why the italics on sabha? If the italics mean what I think they mean, then I empathize with the artiste. Although it appears odd that he/she would choose to make his/her grievances known in this way.

Why all this laborious hinting and innuendo, harimau? Why don't you openly state that it is Vijay Siva and Partahasarathy Sabha? Everyone and his aunt in the circuit has already heard about the diatribe. Those who know the man well are also aware of his idiosyncrasies and also that Partha might be the oldest, but it is run by a bunch of clueless morons.

Good for him for his straightforward response. Many artists must envy those few who are in a position where they do not have to suck up and sir (brown-nose, the Americans say; a slightly more delicate expression than the English equivalent) for a chance to express their art and feed their families.

Rupavathi, that's an interesting theory you have there. I'm not able to agree or disagree ...but I have been wondering why Chennai's oldest sabha uses such an unsuitable hall with such a bad sound system. Do they own the land? Do they have a bogof (buy one year get one free) arrangement? The place is fine for weddings. Not concerts.
