Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, 4 January 2015

Dr M. BalamuraliKrishna
Dr. K. Krishnakumar( Support)
Vid H. K. Venkataram(Violin)
Vid H. S. Sudheendra (Mrudangam)

The venue was Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, Bengaluru on 4th January, 2015.

Reached hall 10 minutes late. Missed a Varnam ( his own composition). A quick Vathapi Ganapathim and simple looking yet splendid swaras.

It was followed by Endaro mahanubhavulu. Most of the swara singing was done by Krishnakumar and sahitya by Dr MB.
Varugha Varugha in Pantuvarali had a beautiful alapana . Vid HK Venkataram reciprocated by correctly following him. (During Dr MBs raga exploration I had difficulty in recognizing it ... he was easily gliding from octaves to octaves and i was effortlessly swinging between Pantuvarali and purvi klyani)

A purandaradasa composition Yaadava Nee Baa ( Ragam : Bahudari) was very sweet.

Then he took up Abheri. Up to Tara Shadjam Dr. MB elaborated. Then Krishnakumar followed it. I wanted to listen to Dr. MB. Krishnakumar was struggling to reach higher notes. the aura created by Dr. MB could not be carried forward by KK. again HKV neatly presented abheri. i missed Dr. MBs Abheri. The Nagumomu that followed was a Jayabheri! . A creative swara kalpana ( his usual :?: :!: :D ) enthralled all. Others on stage were trying very hard to keep up with the standard. HSD showed a neat laya vinyasam later. is it okay to sing it in one kalai aadi talam. usually i have seen in other concerts, the 2 kalai aadi talam for Nagumomu. :?

Narayana the Namo namo in Dr. MB s voice raised my desire for more of Behag. But few more swara addition by KK made Behag to lose its 'Be' and reminded of the remainder! ('hag' ) KK forgot the lyrics at one point.
Pibare ramarasam came out very well. an unknown co-listener sitting next to me certified that its hamir kalyani in hindusthani style. also it is known as vasantha bhairavi in carnatic music. :ugeek:

as a concluding piece, he sang his Brindavani Thillana. he also mentioned that he will not sing mangalam :)

every now and then, people would go near the stage and flaunt their smartphones, trying to capture some fine moments. they missed a lot! it was annoying.

Some rasikas outside the hall were displeased, as KK was being promoted. (bookmyshow.com didn't mean bookkkshow.com  )

Thanks Sukumar. Is kk the one who normally sits behind to remind BMK of words?
Did you snap a photo?

Hamir Kalyani is not Vasantha Bhairavi in carnatic music. They are two totally different ragas.
It is not unusual for senior vocalists to promote their students by giving them chance during creative sections like alapana, neraval, swaras etc. MLV used to do it very often with Charumathi and Sudha and R Vedavalli allows Sumitra Vasudev to interpret the ragas and swaras also.
And KrishnaKumar is not a junior vocalist - he is a senior student of BMK.

Pibare Rama rasam in Hamirkalyani? Quite surprising. It was tuned by Dr MB in Ahir Bhairav and it got world wide pupularity. In fact AB is synonimous with Pibare ramarasam. Other musicians like MSS used to sing this in Yamunakalyani. The carnatic equivalent of Ahir Bhairav is Chakravakam.
